PeeWee & friends

Recently, a car arrived at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue with Pee Wee, a small kitten laying in a box. They asked me to help the kitten, and when I asked what happened they said that Pee Wee had got slammed in the housedoor. They had gotten the kitten only three days before for their two toddlers from a "free kitten" sign at Walmart parking lot in Bemidji.

PEEWEE ALONEWell, of course I took the kitten, and after observing Pee Wee, I offered food and he ravenously ate and then I gave him a bottle and he drank it all. Pee Wee was starving and dehydrated. Pee Wee was clearly still needing his mama.

Pee Wee since getting food has walked, used the litter box and has a good appetite on kitten milk and soft food. Pee Wee does not appear to have injury as far as I can tell. I have attached a picture of this little darling kitten.

PEEWEE & FRIENDSWhen I got the note and photo from Karen, I told her to send him/her down. She ended up fitting purrrfectly with the four bottle babies several of us have been helping to survive for a few weeks now. Soon they'll actually be old enough to go to homes -- Can you resist the cuteness???

Dora Diva Doberman

Dora, the doberman, must have had a guardian angel watching out for her. First, Karen got a call from a school counselor that a mother doberman was in peril of being destroyed. She had 4 pups and the people who owned her no longer wanted her around their home, so they were going to shoot her.

Thankfully a young girl in the family pleaded for Dora and she was instead taken to the garbage dump and left. Avis, a very great helper of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue goes to the dump often and saw Dora, and called the shelter.

The next bit of good luck was there was a MN SNAP clinic in progress at Redby and so there was an opportunity for Dora to be dropped there where she could be spayed and vaccinated. The young girl was called and asked to go and get Dora at the garbage dump and then turn her in to the clinic the next day- which she did.

Dora was such a good girl and everyone loved her. She spent only one week at the shelter and then was off to a better life.

A special thank you to the MN SNAP clinic staff and volunteers, Nancy and Kristin for transport and the Doberman Rescue of Minnesota for taking this girl, now called Diva.

We are so happy to be working with various specialty rescues, many for the first time. The specialty rescues love Red Lake dogs and are having great success at finding them great homes.

UPDATE FROM DOBERMAN RESCUE OF MINNESOTA (DRM):
Through caring people on the reservation Diva has made her way to DRM. This girl is nothing but gentle and kind.

Diva walks nicely on a leash, takes treats gently from your hand, crates very well, rides nicely in the car, gets along well with other dogs and may even enjoy some ball playing. This sweet girl will need a home that can give her lots of love.

She has been spayed, micro-chipped, and is up-to-date on all vaccinations. She will need some time in foster to recover from her pregnancy and the difficulties of her former life.

Black labs adopted

Black lab mix dogs are slow to be adopted, just like black cats, even though everyone who's had one will tell you they are the best! Anyway, we were especially glad for these UPDATES FROM ALL DOG RESCUE:

I just wanted to give you a quick update on two dogs that came from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that had exciting news in the last couple of days.

CARLISLECarlisle (called Murphy at All Dog Rescue) was heartworm-positive after all, plus he had lots of broken teeth and a tumor on his tush that was benign but needed to be removed. Well, his foster dad got him through his dental, tumor removal, and heartworm treatment, and last Friday he was adopted by one of my colleagues from work! I'm so excited that he is with someone I know because I'll get to hear updates all the time - it is a super nice family of a mom, dad, and two girls. Dad is a serious runner so he'll get lots of exercise, but mostly he's going to get tons of love.

JONASAnd as for Jonas (called Jace at All Dog Rescue since we have another Jonas)
- well, he's not even going to make it to Petfinder! He had been in his foster home for almost a week when we got an application for a different dog. The dog they applied for wasn't a good fit, but we put them in touch with Jace's foster mom, and I just found out tonight that he's going to be adopted by them! I know he was up there with you for quite a while, so I'm so happy he found a home so quickly!!!

What is Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (MNSNAP)?

Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program's fully equipped veterinary clinic on wheels delivers low-cost, high-quality spay and neuter surgeries for animals belonging to shelters, rescues and low-income pet owners in Minnesota. We reach pets in neighborhoods where cost, transportation, or the absence of veterinary services is an obstacle to obtaining animal health care and spay/neuter services.

MNSNAP was created by a licensed veterinarian and a group of animal advocates with a goal of reducing the death and suffering of homeless animals all across Minnesota. There are other spay/neuter programs in Minnesota that are designed to help animal shelters and rescue organizations have their dogs and cats altered before adoption; however, until MNSNAP, there hasn’t been any program for income-restricted Minnesotans to have affordable spay/neuter services come to them.

Our mobile surgical unit travels to a pre-scheduled destination for the day. Our staff admits each animal, collects fees, and performs pre-operative physical exams. During the day, all the patients will be cared for by MNSNAP’s highly-qualified, licensed veterinarian and her team of experienced and caring veterinary technicians; patients will be anesthetized and surgically sterilized using the most current anesthesia medications, equipment and surgical techniques. All animals are discharged to their owners/caretakers or back to their rescues or shelters the same day.

Phoenix feeling frisky!

I like how the lead dog waits to make sure Phoenix is still following :-)

Kai, the collie

Kai(pronounced Ki) is a small collie that has been accepted by the Minnesota/Wisconsin Collie Rescue and left Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for his foster home on June 5th.

This little guy is "one of a kind". He was neutered last year by the voucher program. Kai loves to hug and kiss, and was very affectionate to his guardian. He enjoys cats and larger dogs. However, he did not particularly like small breed dogs or puppies either. With some food aggression and resource guarding issues, he will be getting the help of a behavioralist at the Collie Rescue to overcome some of his anxieties.

His guardian sadly misses Kai, and is working through the process of letting go so that Kai can get help and have a better quality life.

Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue has been a very valuable resource to RLRR collies. We are so thankful to have their help. They have taken 4 Red Lake Rosie collies in the past years with great followup stories.

New homes, new friends

Four scaredy pups left Red Lake Rosie's Rescue back in March in search of a better life. TLC Canine Rescue gave them their chance and here are updates on two of them.

ROCCO & VON AS PUPSThis is Rocco and Von when we got them.

VON & KIDSHere is Von, He was one of the four that we got before the last four. He was adopted last week and his brother Rocco was adopted last night.
