Polly is fighting cancer; Send her some love!

Polly McMaster has been a friend of Karen Good for nearly 30 years as they worked together to rescue companion animals in need on the Red Lake Reservation.

For the last few years she has been fighting valiantly against cancer. Even the doctors at the Mayo Clinic don't have further treatment to offer her now and her spirits are low.

Karen and I hope that some of the supporters of RLRR would be so kind as to send a card or note of encouragement to Polly. Here is her address:

Polly was honored along with Karen at a fundraiser for MN SNAP, please watch the video: https://vimeo.com/pablojones/review/78325774/d0318b78d9

Buffy's new home: Love, NO chains and a BFF dog!

Buffy is a six-month-old shepherd mix pup that came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in June with a chain embedded and cutting deeply into the flesh all around her neck. She was lucky to be alive, but in terrible pain and suffering from infection.

Link to see the first two blog posts about Buffy:

She received immediate care through RLRR and as soon as possible was transported to ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation for further treatment with 29 staples around her neck, antibiotics, pain meds, wound cleaning, dressing changes, laser healing, lots of treats and tons of love from her foster family.

I am amazed at how quickly she healed and became available for adoption. She visited with her potential new family and met their great dog and I am delighted to report that she has found her forever home!

Best Wishes, Buffy! I hope we get updates from her family :-)

Kindness of Strangers: New Beginnings for a Lost Soul

On July 10, I received a message from Karen Good, founder of Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue, that a former White Earth resident, now living in south Minneapolis, needed our help. A young stray German Shepherd dog had found his way to this kind gentleman. Unfortunately, he already had three large dogs of his own and lived in a very small place. He needed to find another place for the dog.

Off to Minneapolis I went in search of this kind man and the gentle giant of a dog in his care. I named the gangly dog Tucker; he was all legs and energy. Tucker was very underweight and had some scars on his nose and one of his back feet that appeared to be from old burns. Despite his probable neglect, Tucker wanted just two things…love and a home of his own.

I brought Tucker to my home, which created some chaos with my own three dogs. Tucker quickly found joy in playing with them (all rescues from Red Lake) and started to learn some manners from my Red Lake pack. At 70 pounds (even though he was 15-20 pounds underweight), he was challenging to handle as he has never been taught manners. He constantly jumped on us to get closer.

In typical German Shepherd fashion, Tucker cannot get close enough to the humans he trusts and sees no reason why he should not be a lap dog. He is a very smart boy and has quickly learned ‘sit’ and ‘lay down.’ He’s still working on ‘wait’ and ‘off.’ Tucker also is developing excellent leash manners.

He is an amazing dog, with lots of love to give. He is silly and goofy. He finds immeasurable joy playing in the sprinkler and then rolling in the dirt under the deck, much to my dismay. Luckily, he also has a blast playing in the doggie pool and giving himself a bath! In short, Tucker is bursting with puppy joy!

Through networking with several rescue groups on Facebook, Saving Shepherds of MN (http://www.savingshepherdsofmn.org/) came forward to take Tucker into their care. Soon Tucker will be introduced to his new foster family with the hope they may become his forever family. I am hoping that he and his foster family’s daughter form the bond that only a child and her dog can have. I pray they have many years of happiness and adventure.

Tucker, once a lost soul, is now found. Through the kindness of strangers coming together in a unified mission to rescue, he is on the path to finding his forever family. Happy life Tucker, wishing you all the love in the world. Rescue always matters!

Endorable!!

Back in December of 2014, this tiny kitten was found abandoned in a box in a dumpster and rescued by Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

She moved to ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation for vet and foster care and...

...she just wanted everyone to know that she couldn't be happier in her forever home!

Thanks to everyone who supports RLRR and our partner rescues!!

Matching Fund for White Earth clinics

Diamond is the joyful, blue-eyed, white husky mix in the photo above now, but just a few months ago he was the ill, defeated, homeless dog pictured below.

DIAMOND IN MARCH 2016
Although this diamond in the rough was found on the White Earth Reservation, he came to Red Lake Reservation because there was no organization able to help him there.

DIAMOND IN APRIL 2016
Leech Lake Legacy which works with Leech Lake Reservation and Red Lake Rosie's Rescue on the Red Lake Reservation have come together in 2016 to pay for two spay/neuter clinics for White Earth to help more animals like Diamond.

DIAMOND IN MAY 2016
We have matching funds totaling $9000 from Joan Lawson and Friends of Flicka and need to raise $9000 to get those funds. We're more than halfway there, but we're hoping this update on Diamond's story will encourage more donations to put us over the top! Thank you all!

DIAMOND IN JUNE 2016
Please make a donation with your credit card or mail a check to: RLRR, 23880 South Good Road, Trail, MN 56684 and designate “Clinic".

Mariah's long road to recovery

Back in February, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took in a dog named Mariah that had been attacked and nearly killed by a pack of three dogs. See original post HERE.

After emergency care with RLRR, she was transferred to ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation for further treatment and foster care.

UPDATES FROM ACT V:
Mariah arrived, thanks to Leech Lake Legacy, safely.
And Karen Good, you did an excellent job of keeping her alive.
During her assessment, we learned many new things:

1. She is approximately ten years old.
2. She has newly broken teeth at the gumline (fending off her attackers?)
3. She also has many, old, broken teeth.
4. Her swollen abdomen has severe bruising.
5. Her bite wounds are massive; some were developing an infection.
6. X-ray shows she's carrying around buckshot.
7. Her spine shows evidence of significant arthritis.

Our plan:
She'll stay in the ICU under the care of Affiliated Emergency Veterinary Service.
She had x-rays, ultrasound, IV fluids, extensive blood work and a Fentanyl patch for pain, and a feeding tube because she was not eating.

Sad to say, to add to her list of injuries, Mariah has a fracture in the spinous part of her vertebrae (in her upper neck). She is resting well on multiple pain medications, she eats using elevated bowls, and she is not allowed to play. We have an appointment to see Neurology in a week, and she will probably need an MRI. (All at the U of MN.) She is receiving laser treatment, and we will also be consulting with physical rehab.

Mariah, her foster Dad, and the resident dog (Chance!)
Happy days.

It's official.
MARIAH IS ADOPTED!
It's been a long journey for this poor dog; but with teamwork, medical specialists, and community support, we changed the ending to her story.
Thank you, everyone!
(And maybe send some hugs to her foster family who kissed her goodbye.)
GO MARIAH!

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue thanks ACT V and this foster family for their tremendous care of Mariah!!

Pet-A-Palooza

Our first year at Pet-A-Palooza at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds was windy, hot, and fun! Jodi and Isabella were such great helpers and really got into the Pet-A-Palooza theme by wearing animal hats.

With so many dog related things to see and do, almost everyone brought their dogs along to enjoy the event. We had several adopted dogs from Red Lake come to visit our booth.

MELISSA & MAX
Max was a stray on the reservation with heartworm and other parasites. He was adopted 2 years ago by people that adore him.

BACON & HIS MAMA
Two years ago, a litter of 2-month-old puppies went to Pet Haven for adoption. Shortly after, Bacon was adopted by his forever family. He is definitely a mama’s boy and is great with people. He likes to show his sassiness and unique attitude by talking back to his mama.

LAUREN AT THE BOOTH
We still had a wide variety of items left from the Pet Expo and made over $600! Thanks to everyone who visited our booth.

We hope to see you at Pet-a-Palooza next year!
