Always room for another Rosie!

Rosie, a large malamute dog, came to the shelter during the June clinic. Her owner contacted Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and said he had a dog that he wanted us to take. We found Rosie under the porch and very frightened. She would not come to us and it took several visits to finally get her in the crate and on her way to the clinic and then the shelter.

Rosie was already spayed, so she was vaccinated and checked for heartworm, anaplasma and lymes and it was discovered she had all three! Rosie was also badly matted and it took a while to gain her trust.

The first thing she did was knock the door off her kennel. Then when placed in another kennel, she proceeded to chew the wood and would likely have escaped through the wall. And so Rosie became a free-roaming dog at the shelter as there was really no way to contain her.

Her wonderful personality began to show through shortly and she received heartworm, lymes and anaplasma treatment. She loved to visit with the kids from Youth Works.

Most of the Red Lake dogs over the age of 2 have the triple whammy of diseases caused by ticks and mosquitos, which are both abundant in our region. The treatment for heartworm is very expensive and hard on the dogs. The treatment for lymes and anaplasma take a long time with daily administration of antibiotics.

On August 5th Rosie had a grooming which included a total shave as her hair was badly matted with burrs.

We are happy to report that Rosie left for Pet Haven and is now in foster care just before the winter hit. She is now an inside dog with a large family which she loves!

Rosie is one example of the medically needy animals we have rescued here at Red Lake. Thanks to your ongoing support, we have medical funds to cover the cost. Also, thank you to the rescues like Pet Haven who take in the Red Lake dogs and cats and find homes for them.

UPDATE FROM PET HAVEN:
Rosie is doing great. She went to a family with 6 home-schooled kids. They are a calm family even with 6 kids! Rosie went to the vet today and got all checked out. They are grooming her on Wednesday to get the remaining burrs out. This family took in Duchess after I had her for a year and got her adopted.
