Red Lake native, Karen Good, founded Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue Inc. in 2006. She was both a teacher and a principal during her 18 years working with at-risk kids. Karen & RLRR's mission is to reduce the overpopulation, homelessness, disease and malnutrition of companion animals on the Red Lake Reservation in Northern Minnesota
Karen has been referred to as the “Mother Theresa” of the Red Lake animal community. Her compassion, dedication and hard work have inspired numerous supporters. After meeting Karen, many people say that their lives have been touched in very special ways. Karen works tirelessly and selflessly to care for the RLRR animals.
Karen often gives presentations to local schools. She teaches the children how to care for companion animals, talks about the need for compassion and humane treatment, and the importance of spay/neuter to reduce overpopulation. The kids love seeing and petting the assortment of puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats that Karen brings with her from the shelter.
RLRR has a permanent shelter located on the western boundary of the reservation and is located 18 miles away from the nearest town. The shelter consists of several outdoor kennels for dogs and an indoor facility for cats and puppies. The kennels are filled with straw for warmth in the bitterly cold winters of northern Minnesota. The kennels are cleaned daily and fresh water and food is provided. Each day,the animals get time to exercise and socialize with other animals.
Approximately 4 times a year RLRR hosts spay/neuter clinics, for the Red Lake Nation. RLRR pays for all surgeries through fundraising. Karen is committed to helping the animals of the Red Lake Nation. She relies mostly on volunteers, but they are few and far between. So, that means she works 24/7 by herself. Getting to know Karen Good has changed my life! She is selfless, caring, humble, compassionate, spiritual, & very determined in her mission. She giving her life for the animals and her people of the Red Lake Nation. Despite the hardships, sacrifice, the lack of support by the Band, & the emotional cost to Karen...she keeps on. I have never met anyone with so much to give. Someone who asks nothing in return. I don't know how she keeps going sometimes. There is so much that I would like to do for her and her rescue/shelter. She is the most deserving person that I have ever met. I would do anything for her!!!
