August 8 Transport
NICK'S TRANSPORT
We had a new volunteer, Nick, visit the shelter arriving August 6th and leaving with a transport of 2 cats and 9 puppies and dogs on Sunday the 8th.
NICK AND DOGS
Nick was a great help at the shelter helping with daily chores and even learned how to drive the Bobcat with the loader. It was a real blessing to have weekend help to clean puppy pens and put down fresh cedar chips. He helped walk dogs, water, feed, and do all the necessary things to keep all the animals healthy and happy.
JASPER
Jasper, Ella and Shadow went to Act V.
ELLA
Ella was thrown away at the garbage dump- a beautiful girl with a broken front foot. Act V is helping her.
SHADOW
Shadow is a very nice black lab mama that we have had at the shelter for a month who is now in the great hands of Dr. Vickie at Act V. Her story is a special one.
SHADOW'S PUPS
SHADOW'S PUPS
She came in after she was found with a litter of puppies in a log pile this summer, and was limping and malnourished. One by one we got her puppies out- five altogether. Shadow's lst pup found was a tan female that went to Act V. 2 more recovered and l more recovered; these three went to ARVSS.
SHADOW'S LAST PUP
The very last pup was Rachel. She was near death from dehydration and starvation. She is doing very well now in foster care at Act V.
SHADOW & MILES
Shadow was spayed and vaccinated at Clearwater Vet and her blood test revealed she had heartworm, anaplasmosis and lymes. Additionally she had a uterine infection where buckshot pellets were found embedded at the time of her spay. Shadow left Sunday July 18 for Act V. Dr. Vickie reports that her xray also showed a bullet in her lower leg, which she will remove. Shadow, her pups, and Sheeba were all rescued from the same residence and both dogs had been shot! Thank you for Act V and all our supporters who made their rescue possible. They are both great dogs and were used as target practice by someone in the neighborhood.
RACHEL
The miraculous part of this story is that these dogs were rescued over a period of a month and no one really can explain how little Rachel survived all this time by herself.
SAMMY
Sammy is a great guy brought from Ponemah and has a great personality and great future now in foster care with Pet Haven
PUPPY PILE
These five husky mix pups who went to TLC were found in the woods at 4 weeks- now at 6 weeks they are growing like weeds. (They were featured on the blog last week.)
LEROY
PATCHES
Leroy and Patches went to Feline Rescue. Handsome young Leroy was going to be shot, and we gladly took him and neutered him. Patches is a pretty dilute tortie. Feline Rescue reports that they are both very sweet cats and likely to be adopted soon!
Thank you to Nick, transporters, Denise and Laura and rescues for taking the animals for their second chance.
Sincerely, Karen

RLRR cats and kittens need foster care or rescue
The greatest need is for cats and/or kittens – she has 29.
There are two litters of kittens that are 8-9 weeks old and weaned from their mother, wormed, eating well, normal stool, playful & healthy: one litter of 4 tabbies and another litter of 5 mostly tabbies.
There are also a number of nice adult cats ready to go.
Please contact Karen or me at blog@redlakerosie.org for more information. There is another transport midweek this week.
I took in a cat and six kittens from one household. Their photos are included here and their story follows.
I am sending you some pics of a little survivor kitten.
Apparently last night there were 2 kittens (only about 3 weeks old) dropped off at a residence and a man in the household threw the kittens out of the house. A pitbull outside the residence apparently killed one and this is the little survivor who was taken from the pitbull and still miraculously alive with only a slight injury to the eye.
I located the source of the kittens and there are 5 more and 2 mothers which I am scheduled to pick up tomorrow. I alerted them NOT to give the people at that residence any more kittens to feed to the dogs.
I am hoping someone will take Survivor on the next transport. The kitten is still doing the crawl and barely moves.
Anyone out there able to help Survivor?
Sincerely, Karen and RLRR

I got all the kitties- 5 kittens and 2 mamas from the source of little Survivor.
Thankfully one of the mamas is letting him nurse. She also has 5 tiny kittens that she is nursing- They said born on July 29- so they would be 2 weeks old.
The mama was very starving so I wormed her, gave her revolution topical and kitten kibble and moist food. Boy, she really ate.
Karen
The six kittens and surrogate mom arrived at my house yesterday and are settling in well. All the littles have a lot of energy and mom cat is driven to distraction. Good thing she can get away when she sits in the window sill or in the sink!
Nick's first visit to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue
It was a wonderful experience. The shelter, and Karen, are models for the rescue community.

RLRR dogs adopted by Pet Haven
FROM PET HAVEN'S DOG BLOG:
Monday, August 16, 2010
Libby (aka Liberty Bloosum Carter-her AKC name)now Lexi was adopted last week by her foster family. Libby came to Pet Haven with her "brother" Scooby --also adopted already-- from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.
Two AKC registered Shelties are not what one would normally expect on the rez. Both dogs were lovingly cared for and given up only after the city of Gonvic found out the owner had two too many dogs.
Lexi joins a family of shelties. Her sisters Cali and Lili accepted her right away. Lexi's mom says she is the best behaved one of the three.
Looks like Lexi has found her comfy spot. Have a good life, girly girl.

Cheers for the Poms!!
We are just loving the Pomeranians lately....and not just because they are cute and cuddly and oh so sweet...and did I mention they were cute? We've had four Poms come in this year so far and each one of them stirs up all kind of interest and activity on our website and at adoption events.
Remember Ollie? Ollie was the first Pom of the year to come in from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and was adopted out to a wonderful lady, Paula, within a month or so of arriving in the Twin Cities.
Well, Ollie, now Olivia, made an appearance at the 7/31 Adoption event as she was going in for her day of pampering at the PetCo Salon. Paula was very grateful to Pet Haven and couldn't stop gushing over her sweet little Olivia. We interrupted her spa treatments to snap a few photos of the lovely girl.
Congrats to Paula and Olivia...we hope to see you around other events in the future!

Good Grooming
I wanted to share the good news that Cheri of Friendly Fins Pet Store in Bemidji is offering to do complimentary grooming for shelter dogs that need a haircut.
CHERIE
One of the problems we have in our area is many people get breeds of dogs that require grooming and they do not get groomed. As a result we are seeing animals suffering with overgrowth of hair filled with burrs and matts. Other items in the fur may include a fishhook, a piece of candy, and other items. Also it is a breeding grounds for fleas, lice and mange.
PEANUT BEFORE
Especially in hot weather, these animals are really suffering.
PEANUT AFTER
We are thankful to have grooming at the clinics and now Cheri will take in some shelter dogs for grooming when the clinic is not in operation.
MOUSER: LION KING
Thank you to Cheri and all the clinic groomers for freeing these dogs and teaching the people that these dogs need to be clipped and bathed regularly.

Millie ain't quillie no more!
MESSAGE FROM MILLIE'S FOSTER MOM:
I just wanted to let you all know I'm seeing Millie blossom. Her hair is starting to grow back from all the shaved spots, so the scars and scrapes are hidden. She's been eating 3 meals a day so she has gained some weight.
But most of all........Today for the first time ever...she felt happy and playful enough to run full speed to play chase with my dogs.
So thanks to everyone for helping her!!!! It is really exciting to see her happy and full of life.
These are the days when rescue feels so worthwhile!!

MILLIE IS ON PETFINDER.COM
Millie is a pretty girl estimated to be about a year old. She's a nice medium-sized shepherd mix weighing only 46 pounds. Millie had a difficult summer, and ran into some bad luck!
About a month ago, Millie was picked up as a stray in Red Lake, Minnesota. She was injured from a meeting with a porcupine. Millie had to have surgery to remove over 100 quills.
During her stay at the vet, Millie was found to have a slightly enlarged heart and a low-grade murmur. Her vet indicated that many dogs suffer no consequences from heart murmurs and live long, healthy lives. Millie therefore was marked as a special needs dog because whomever adopts her will want have her heart monitored at her routine vet visits.
Millie is now recovering from her spay surgery at her foster home. She enjoys relaxing in the house, staying out of the summer heat, and hanging out with the resident dogs and cats. She is very sweet and easygoing. Millie is also a smart dog. She is food-motivated, sits nicely and has learned to be crate-trained and housebroken.
Millie is looking for a nice family to adopt her and take her to a home where she is safe, spoiled and away from porcupines forever.
Millie is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
