Bert & Ernie

On April 26th, Karen, Geri, and our friend Jill White from the metro made visits to the Red Lake communities. On the trip delivering food and medications, they took 2 surrendered small breed dogs which were later named Bert and Ernie.

BERTBoth Bert and Ernie were injured. Bert, the little black chihuahua was run over by a car and lived outdoors and was found actually able to walk on his front two legs while balancing his injured rear legs in midair.

ERNIELater on our journey we got Ernie, a white jack russell mix which had been attacked by a husky. He had bite wounds on his chest and torso.

Both little boys went to the vet for assessment that afternoon where X rays determined that Bert had one broken leg and one hip that needed surgery- so both rear legs were damaged. Ernie had lacerations and was put on pain medication and antibiotics.

Thankfully, Akin Hills Pet Hospital , Dr. Bartsch, Lindsay, and Mallory of the Animal Ark agreed to take the boys and get them the medical help they need.

They were able to leave with Jill White at 7:00 am, Thursday, April 28th and were transported directly to Akin Hills where they are in surgery today the 29th.

BERTWe want to thank Dr. Bartsch, Lindsay, Mallory, and Jill for helping Bert and Ernie. Without their kindness it looked rather bleak, especially for Bert.

UPDATE FROM AKIN HILLS:
ERNIESo the little one that was more white, is doing fine. Still has a bad infection but we started antibiotics and that should clear up soon. He will be going to animal ark with me tomorrow:) The broken leg guy is a little more severe, he will have to have the broken leg amputated and the dislocated one will have a femoral head resection.

BERTWe will take good care of both of them. They are so very sweet! We renamed them Bert and Ernie. Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow so I will keep you posted on how things are going:)
