Update on Buffy's recovery from embedded collar

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue introduced you to Buffy with the horrific embedded collar injury earlier this week (see post HERE) and we knew you would be waiting anxiously for an update. This recovery will take a long time, but she is receiving antibiotics, pain meds, laser treatments, and lots of love.

SQUEEZE CHEESE AND LASER TREATMENTS HELP BUFFY HEAL
Thanks to the staff at South Hyland Pet Hospital for caring about her emotional well-being, as well as her physical state.

UPDATE FROM ACT V FOSTER MOM:
I am fostering this love bug!!! She is so happy and squiggly and just overjoyed at this happy turn her life has taken. Thank heavens for Red Lake Rosie's and ACT V Rescue! My first foster was Bryan, also a wonderful dog with an embedded collar. Thank you for saving them!!!

UPDATE FROM BUFFY:

The horror of an embedded collar

It was a sad night at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue when a juvenile puppy arrived with an embedded chain around its neck. Poor Buffy, a beautiful German shepherd, is about 6 months old and only weighs 25 lbs.

She is very malnourished and has suffered all her life with this tight chain which now had grown into her neck leaving a large gash all around her neck, very deep and infected. The deepest laceration was under the chin. The odor was so strong I had to drive with the window open on the way to the vet.

Buffy had a severe infection and a high fever. This sweet soul, immune to her pain, was wagging her tail as I took her into the vet.

LOOK AT THE EMBEDDED CHAIN
There is a risk that the chain could cut the carotid artery and the animal will bleed to death or that the larynx would be destroyed in the process of removing chain. But, my fear and sadness turned to joy when I heard from the vet that she successfully removed it. Then, I knew Buffy's healing could begin.

Thank you to our supporters who make funds available to provide life-saving medical care.

There is not greater joy than to free an animal from an embedded chain or collar. The suffering leading up to their freedom cannot be imagined. I know that these photos are shocking, but this is the reality. Healing will be long and slow.

We are so happy that our wonderful rescue partners ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation were willing to take on Buffy's care and she was transported to them over the weekend.

Sincerely, Karen

Everyone is welcome!! We want to see our volunteers and supporters from the last ten years as well as adopters of our dogs, volunteers from our partner rescue organizations, and anyone who would just like to learn more. Bring a friend and please spread the word!

Two new members have been added to the board of directors for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue: Kim Williams and me (Denise Luke). We are organizing this meeting and we are anxious to get ideas from you all to take back to the board. This is a fresh start for the RLRR Metro Support Committee.

Bronco Billy

A little puppy named Bronco Billy was surrendered to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue with a damaged and infected eye. RLRR got in touch with ARVSS who gladly helped get a transport organized.

Bronco Billy left for Wisconsin on May 25th along with 5 other puppies and Rusty, an adult dog that had been a victim of a dog attack. We've had a great report on this pup already!

Karen

UPDATE FROM ARVSS:
I took Bronco Billy to be evaluated at the clinic I work at and the veterinarians there decided that his eye needed to come out right away. The pressure on his eye was 34--and glaucoma is anything over 20. So they gave up their lunch hours and they took it out. I have included before and after pictures for you- And he is acting like nothing happened!!!

Matt calls him a scoundrel--and he is playing and acting and getting into a lot of trouble just like a regular puppy. We all so happy for him!

RLRR at Animal Welfare Conference

Three Red Lake Rosie's Rescue Board members recently attended the 15th Annual Minnesota Animal Welfare Conference 2016 on Thursday, May 26, at the Best Western Kelly Inn in Saint Cloud, MN.

Carol Priest, Kim Williams, and Nancy O'Sullivan joined many other Minnesota attendees for a full day of learning from an impressive line up of speakers. There were two tracks to select from....the veterinary track and the general track. The RLRR board members selected the general track. Our workshops included:
#1 A Matter of Trust: A Humane Approach to Animal Welfare, speaker B.J. Rogers
#2 Customer Service Strategies for Animal Welfare Professionals, speaker Cathy Rosenthal
#3 The Difficult to Place Continuum - Practical Applications to Placing Challenging Cats and Dogs, speaker Mike Keiley
#4 Adoption Ambassadors: How Your Community Can help Save More Lives, speaker B.J. Rogers

The speakers were outstanding. They were interactive with the listening audience and each speaker delivered high quality learning information. At the end of each workshop, we were treated with snacks and could visit exhibitors (Austin Cotton, ASPCA, The HSUS, GBC, KindestCut, Minnesota Animal Disaster Coalition, Life Vantage Canine Health, Roadrunner Pharmacy, Tomahawk Live Trap). Additional door prizes and handouts were donated by ID Tag.com, MN School of Business, and our host, Tri-County Humane Society of Saint Cloud. A silent auction was held, along with lunch by poolside.

What an incredible day. For myself, I greeted old friends whom I haven't seen for several years, met up with partnering rescues who wanted to talk "RLRR", and made new friends. Thank you for making this special day possible.

~Nancy O'Sullivan
