Pepi: Lost and Found

On Tuesday October 8th, Joel of Red Lake DNR called and reported that someone had dumped a dog ready to have babies in the wilderness at the Good Lake Project. The pregnant dog was sighted about 3 miles in that road the day before. Kevin and I went immediately to the area and searched but found no dog!
On returning to the shelter the information was posted and we offered a reward for her and before long a car pulled in the driveway. Roger and Carolyn had a very pregnant brindle shepherd we named Pepi. We were so happy that Pepi had managed to walk several miles out of the wilderness area and came to a tar road where she was found walking.
We were so happy to have her in a safe place at the shelter where she could have her babies. It was apparent that it would not be long before she would deliver the puppies. She was starting to get bags and looked like a little melon.

What a wonderful dog she was! Pepi was very sweet and friendly and seemed to be grateful to her rescuers and that she now has safe sanctuary. We wondered how anyone could have abandoned her in the wilderness?

On October 10th early in the morning when Pepi did not come out of her kennel, I checked to find 6 little puppies. She continued to have 2 more through the morning. One died but 7 survived!
A big thank you to Joel and his workers who made the report; to Kevin for helping search; to Carolyn and Roger for stopping to pick her up and bring her to the shelter; and to the many people who sent out prayers and well wishing; and to Vickie, Bonnie, and Lid who were carefully watching over Pepi at the shelter. Also thank you to the people who support us financially, to the rescues who take the animals, and to the transporters who take the animals to their destinations.
We all work together to make it possible to save the Pepis of the world. Pepi made it “just in the nick of time” or she and her puppies would have died with winter soon arriving.

  2. Wanted to update you all on one of Pepi's babies! We have Took, an adorable, sweet little black, white and brindle mix from her. He's doing SO great, just a typical Took, a lot of energy, lots of new teeth, and so lovable! He's spoiled and so easily trained! So many people have learned of RLRR because of him and I will continue to tout your great work! Thank you again!
