Junebug today

Hi, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue! We were lucky enough to have June Bug adopt us a few years ago. We know that she was rescued by you on June 9, 2009 and since we don't know her real birthday, we've been using that date as her "rebirth day". A couple of years have passed and we thought you might like to hear how she's doing.
June Bug has finally graduated out of "puppy energy" status to "just really strong" dog status within the last year or so. She's very popular with a couple of other dogs in the neighborhood and they regularly come over for several hours of play in our backyard. At night, she likes to sleep in our bed and when the lights go out she hops down and wanders into her crate.
She's been very healthy and she adores puppies and kids. Maybe that's because she had 11 puppies herself in the car on the way to Wisconsin! (See first blog post here and others by searching for "junebug")
Overall, she's just a great dog!
Thanks again for all your hard work (and ARVSS!) and for giving us the opportunity to meet the very beautiful Ms. June Bug!

Sincerely,
S & R

Puffs

A very nice police officer found 2 tiny kittens (just getting teeth and only drinking kitten milk) on the highway in Red Lake and brought them to the shelter last night.  I did not weigh them yet and have been feeding kitten milk.

Karen

I worked with Feline Rescue and found a foster home for these tiny orphans, but learned that the next transport from Red Lake would not be for several days. I knew how busy Karen was at the shelter and how much care little orphans require, so I took the afternoon off work and drove up to Bemidji, met Karen to get the kittens and drove right back down with them -- an eight-hour roundtrip. The next morning I took them to their foster mom who is a specialist with tiny orphan kittens. We decided to call them "The Puffs", for obvious reasons :-)

REPORT FROM FOSTER MOM:
The kittens are doing great! Eating hard and soft food and learning to snuggle with humans. They are so beautiful!

Windwalker, now Allie

I shall never forget the day I picked Windwalker up, and I had no crate so I chained her in the rear of the cargo van for the drive to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. She came in with puppies I named Winston and Windy.
They all had mange, so did Windwalker. She was SO skinny.

She was very hungry and was trying to stretch and reach loose pieces of dog kibble on the floor of the van. She was desperate! Poor dear, took a week to gain enough trust in me to walk by me on leash and to finally get her fill of kibble.  A great turnaround occurred and soon I bonded with her. What a gal!!

On March 16th, Windwalker left for foster care at Pet Haven. A special thank you to Pet Haven and fosters for helping Windwalker along on her journey to a great home!

Following are Windwalker's "After pics". What a beautiful transformation from the first day I met her-

UPDATE FROM FOSTER MOM AND ADOPTIVE FAMILY:
Windwalker, now Allie, was recently adopted and she is doing GREAT.
I absolutely love her new home!  The couple said you are welcome to share an update/photos on your blog if you'd like.  Eventually she will be trained in for therapy work, as their previous dog was.  A quote from them:
Just a quick update on Allie. She seems to be taking to the new name really well. Treats are a GREAT tool!! She's still learning her surroundings and LOVES going outside! She actually barked this morning at the back door to go out!! Only 1 other time has she barked (at the "killer ducks" that made their way on to our patio!!). Jean got a neat video of that!! She walks and jogs with me just fine; she listens well and doesn't pull at all! She is just a little timid still, but that's to be expected. Every day brings more confidence!
Thanks again!

Phineas Needs a Home

PHINEAS NOW
Phineas, a ShihTzu, arrived at the June spay/neuter clinic with a matted coat full of ticks. One engorged tick was blocking his eye.
PHINEAS ON ARRIVAL
He was wonderfully patient while being bathed and groomed. Underneath his coat, his body was covered in scabs from the ticks and other parasites.
Phineas is about two years old and has lived a tough life as an outdoor dog. Nevertheless, he is a huge cuddler and still very playful. He adores all kinds of toys, something he probably never had as a puppy.
He loves to go for car rides and is a wonderful companion. Phineas is the kind of dog that looks at his human and instinctively knows what the plan is!

He likes both cats and dogs.

If you are looking for a sweet, devoted friend, Phineas is looking for you.

A Miracle for Big Boy

Big Boy, a community dog, first became known Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in 2009 when he was neutered. Then in 2011, he spent two months convalescing at RLRR after he came to us for treatment of a neck laceration from an embedded wire. He became our friend and since that time we have visited Big Boy with food, treats, and to check on how he was doing. He always greeted us with a smile!
Dr. Kim caring for Big Boy
We learned that Big Boy had been missing for 3 weeks. On June 11th, he came limping home, emaciated, dehydrated, and with the lower part of one leg missing. We believe he was caught in a trap and bit off or broke off his leg to escape. Thankfully, this was during the June clinic and the owner brought Big Boy to us.
Special guests of MN SNAP were visiting the clinic and happened to be at the warehouse when poor Big Boy arrived. Dr. Kim stabilized him and gave him pain medication.
In a twist of fate and remarkable act of kindness, one of the guests, Britt, who is a supporter of MN SNAP, offered to transport Big Boy to the Twin Cities on her family jet. As a result, he was able to leave that afternoon from the Bemidji Airport and was taken to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital for help. There was not a dry eye in the warehouse as all these events fell into place. It was as if we were all there for the sole purpose of helping Big Boy!
Transport
As we carried Big Boy aboard the beautiful white plane, it was like a dream come true. Here this very broken, humble Big Boy rode out with so much dignity. It was amazing! He had his own pair of private pilots and laid on a very cushy blanket attended by 8 very loving people, plus one puppy Cassidy, and an orphan duckling.

Karen :)

BRITT WROTE LATER THE NEXT DAY:
Big Boy immediately was taken to the U last night where a number of doctors ran tests and fell in love with him. Even though these amazing animals are all very special - he has already left a big impression on all of us including the doctors tending to him.

They have controlled any pain - given him a bath and before surgery this afternoon I got to spend about an hour and a half with him. He cuddled with me the whole time. He would look at me and then put his head into me and would let me hug him.

I know you said Big Boy was your friend and I believe that your friendship with him deserves great respect so he will always be given the best. As all animals deserve the best - Big Boy has touched a number of us and I personally will cherish that.
Big Boy in happier times
I think about his timing yesterday and it teaches me that when there is a will there is a way and I believe that your heart and love for these animals works like that everyday to accomplish the things you do. He made it to the clinic when you were there and you let us take him and help him. He trusts you and loves you and something helped him make it. He is the epitome of unconditional love. He has been through a lot and still loves through it. The world can benefit from him as he is a gift to the world.

Thank you for everything.
Britt

MN SNAP memories of June 2013 clinic

This is just a sampling of the photos in the album "Red Lake Clinic June 2013" on the Facebook page for Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program.

Mom and Pop of the Pug/Min Pin puppies. No more litters for these two!! Just more days of cuddling

Pug/Min Pin pups featured earlier this week on RLRR blog/Facebook. Looking for homes!

"Cat" didn't want to be bothered to stand up for his photo, he loved his pink blanket too much!

About a month ago a black lab named Big Boy had gone missing from his home. Today he came back, skinny and limping. He had gotten his front paw caught in a trap and had either broke or chewed off the first quarter of this leg to escape the trap. His bone was exposed about 3 inches while the skin and muscle tried to heal around it. He was rushed to MN SNAP and was given pain medication and IV fluids. A MN SNAP supporter, Brit Gage, had happened to stop by for the day and immediately made arrangements for him to be brought back to the cities for full medical attention. Please send your thoughts and prayers to Big Boy for a full recovery. He has been through an amazing ordeal, but the timing of his return could not have been better. Thank you to all the amazing people at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and Karen Good for giving this guy a fighting chance.

Post-op recovery area.

The dogs presented for surgery today were crawling with literally hundreds of ticks. The skin was irritated and left with large scabs and bumps all over - luckily these dogs had ticks removed and were treated with Frontline Plus.

A small sample of the THOUSANDS of ticks removed from ourselves and the animals presented at the clinic this week! :0

A surprise visitor down the road at the sanitation station!

URGENT: Ongoing need for tick meds

As you are reading the posts about the recent clinic (or reading the newspaper or watching the news), it is clear that ticks are an especially bad problem this year for people and animals.

I checked with Karen at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and while she has enough for the animals at the shelter, we need lots more in order to treat animals at the upcoming clinics and to have a supply for the community.

Please make a donation!

You order tick meds on Amazon.com from the Red Lake Rosie's Rescue Wishlist and they'll be sent directly to RLRR.

If anyone wishes to donate flea and tick medicines, or make a monetary donation so we can purchase the medicines, please let us know.

June 2013 Clinic

The Red Lake Rosie's Rescue / MN SNAP clinic in June will be long-remembered for the appalling number of ticks on the animals. Volunteers were kept busy removing hundreds of them. Many puppies and dogs had them down in their ear canals, which were challenging to remove.
Tick removal
We had some extra time to pull ticks, since a bridge was closed in Redby, which closed off access to the clinic for almost half the reservation. Nevertheless, MN SNAP altered 64 animals, and 31 previously altered animals were vaccinated, wormed, and given flea/tick preventative.
The most heart-wrenching intake was Big Boy, a dog well-known to Karen. He was brought in with his foot missing, about four inches of exposed leg bone, and a massive infection in his upper leg. Apparently caught in a leg hold trap, Big Boy had been missing for three weeks. We were all shocked that this dog could chew or break his foot out of the trap and make it home. He was dehydrated, emaciated, and very weak.
Big Boy (more on his story soon!)
Big Boy had come in about a year earlier with a deeply embedded wire around his neck (see previous post). He spent many weeks at the shelter healing from surgery and infection, and Karen grew to love him.

After all of his suffering, Big Boy was fortunate to catch a plane ride to the Cities the same day. His leg was amputated, and he is doing well. There could be no dog more deserving of the love and care that he is receiving than Big Boy.
Two dogs were adopted by volunteers. Kim and Aurelia adopted a juvenile, Willie, now Denali. They had previously adopted another RLRR dog, McKinley.
Dr. Marie and her daughter, Natalie, took Delilah home, a sweet adult girl with demodectic mange. They have a RLRR cat from a previous clinic.
We always visit the Red Lake dump when going to and from the warehouse to see if there are any animals that have been left there. Lauren successfully trapped a cat who will go to a better life. We generally leave the bears at the dump, though, as they seem to have plenty of food.
Thanks go to Claudia and Tera for feeding everyone again; Dawn, Denise, Shelly, Mary, Jenny, and Carma, who came from the northern hinterlands to help groom and care for the animals; Kim, Aurelia, Amy, Colin, Jean, Deb, Lauren, Colleen, Carol, Nancy H., and Nancy O, and Dr Marie and Natalie . Also, thanks go to our local helpers, Jolene, Phyllis, Vivian, and Alonzo.

Cedric charms the ladies and loves his cat

Cedric arrived at the Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue in March 2013 with a very severe case of demodex mange.  He transferred  from Leech Lake Legacy as there were no options for him in his condition with any rescue in the metro.
This little pitbull mix pup was a very nice boy who was so happy to live in the cathouse bedroom.  He went out to do his business and was happy to return into the warm environment again.

How Cedric managed to survive the cold Minnesota winter outdoors is a miracle. His severe mange meant he had very little hair to keep himself warm and his feet would bleed when he walked on them.

Cedric was patient and quiet and was very lucky to get his opportunity for foster care with Susie and Matt at ARVSS on April 6th.

Karen
UPDATE FROM ARVSS:
Cedric is doing good. Still has red paws and half way up his legs but his immune system has kicked in and he is healing fast--no more swelling.

He is good enough that he will be neutered tomorrow (yippee)

He spent the day running around our front yard with Arwin (Cinder Ella)--All my girls (we own 5 female dogs) just love having a boy around LOL!

I will keep you updated on his progress, but he is definitely on the road to recovery!

UPDATE FROM ARVSS:
Thought you would like to know that Cedric's paws are looking really great! Not quite healed totally, but he is looking so good and walking a lot better!

He loves this cat of ours! Both want to play, but neither knows how to play with the other--it is quite funny--but here they are in down time :)
How cute is this???
