As you start your Holiday shopping, consider a donation to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue:
We could use pledges for heat for the cathouse/shelter. The heat is electric and runs about $300 per month in winter months. We use about $2,200 year on the electric bill. Our account is at Red Lake Electric Cooperative, 412International Drive, Red Lake Falls, MN 56750.
Our account is Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, Inc., Account # 9518005.03
An automatic dishwasher is needed for cleaning pet food dishes. This would not only be a timesaver, but it would sanitize the dishes better than handwashing. An industrial strength/professional model would be most appropriate.
A shop vacuum is needed for cleaning in the cat house. It is very difficult to clean out the big kennels without one. Cleaner cages will keep the animals healthier.
2 good quality pitch forks for clean straw into kennels and soiled straw out. The two we have have bent tines and make the job harder.
A couple of good mops and a couple of new stiff bristle brooms would be nice.
We need cat litter- we are going through a lot with the high volume of cats.
We need dog & cat kibbleand leashes
Donations toward our routine medical expenses, for example:
feline distemper shot - $18
feline rabies shot - $20
FeLV/FIV test - $30
heartworm test - $20
canine DHPP and Rabies - $40
Ivermectin is a standard mange supply which is $30/ 100 mL when we buy bulk 500mL. (l00 mL will cure at least 60 dogs/pups)
We use lots of SMZ (sulfatrimeth) antibiotics for skin and intestinal infections in dogs at .35 per tablet. We buy bulk 800 tabs
We also purchase Albon for intestinal infection of cats/kittens, dogs/pups who have diahrea - cost per 200 mL = $118
We also need Revolution for cats/kittens and dogs/puppies for fleas and other parasites. It is quite expensive at about $10.00 per dose.
Also, the doses of pyrantel, puppy shots @ $9 each.
Money donations for the vet bill.
Send checks to Red Lake Rosie's Animal Fund Account at
Clearwater Veterinarian Services
Gonvick, MN 56644
What we DON'T need currently is blankets, dog collars, canned foods, towels, laundry soap, dish soap, puppy sweaters, kitty blankets, litter boxes. Thanks to donations we have all of this is abundance at this time.
Thank you so much, Karen

Svetlana's pink palace
Svetlana was actually the first of the Russian Circus Troupe kittens to be adopted. I think she was a little relieved to get away from her four crazy brothers. Her new name is Moxie and it describes her well. She now is loved by a girl and her family and is trying to make friends with the family beagle. Her next challenge will be to learn sign language to keep up with the dog and communicate better with her deaf family.
PINK PALACENOTE BEFORE ADOPTION:
Hello, thanks for the reply. Our dog, a beagle, is 4 years old. He allowed our previous cat (Foxy) to play with him and both of them got along really well. Sadly, Foxy has passed away, so we are looking for a kitten (indoor). The kitten that I found online is Svetlana with the pink collar. We would love to adopt another Korat cat like Foxy. We adopted Foxy from Chicago where my brother-in-law found her in an empty house. We took her and cared for her for 17 years.
T-
MOXIE'S NEW GIRLUPDATE AFTER ADOPTION:
She's doing good! She still has not settled in with our dog . She gets angry when the dog appoaches or comes near her. Our dog looks scared when she hisses at him. He is respectful and stays away from her until she gets used to him. We already took some pixs, and we will send them to you soon. Our daugther was so happy to have her! Thanks for letting us adopt Moxie (Svetlana).

Thankful
Red Lake Rosie's Rescue is thankful to all the people who have supported our mission to improve the lives of the dogs and cats of the Red Lake Reservation: volunteers, donors, adopters, foster caregivers, rescue groups, medical teams, and, of course, Karen Good, the board, and the supporters in the Red Lake community.
If you can't help directly, you can help by spreading the word. What we have accomplished is captured in this blog for all to see.
I want to thank everyone who has contributed stories and photos and all the readers for your kind attention and response to those stories.

The ABE! Fund
The ABE! Fund honors the memory of ABE!, a 10 year-old Clumber Spaniel who died in 2009 of stomach cancer. ABE! was a true officer and a gentleman of the Clumber community. Nothing delighted ABE! more than lowering his massive soft head to prowl beneath bushes or bramble. Although he did not truly hunt as Clumbers were bred to do, ABE! was a great pretender.
At home, he was seldom without a squeaking stuffed “baby” in his mouth, moaning with delight when presented with a new one. His intense snoring was legendary. His posterior wiggled to almost a “U” when greeting at the door or in the park.
From the tender age of two, ABE! became a champion fund-raiser. During the Christmas holidays, guests poured into his home with needed supplies and $$$ for a different designated shelter each year. Learning of Red Lake Rosie's toward the end of his life, ABE! and his friends raised $1000 to send to Rosie's in Minnesota. This good work will now continue.
Started by friends of ABE!’s, the ABE! perpetual fund will support seasonal needs such as straw for winter bedding, special projects, and the year round need for medical supplies, especially vaccines and antibiotics.
The ABE! fund has raised about $1400 in cash and several hundred $$ in donations - hand-sewn fleece blankets, dog toys, laundry detergent, dish detergent, paper towels, crates, etc.
Photos show the ABE! Fund donations being loaded into the van after the benefit in Lake Forest, IL, and the donations arriving at RLRR.
ABE! and all his many friends are honored to be Rosie's first dedicated fund to aid in the health and well-being of the dogs at Red Lake Rosie's.

Katya: Russian princess
The Russian Circus Troupe kittens have begun to find their homes. Katya discovered that she is really a princess!
NOTE FROM ADOPTER TO FOSTER COORDINATOR:
Hi T~
I just wanted to thank you for all of your assistance in my search for a kitten! This experience has been wonderful!
Even though I was sad to hear that Svetlana had already been adopted, we did adopt her sister, Katya, on Saturday! Katya is precious and seems to be loving her new home. She's getting brave and venturing out more and more throughout the house. She is just a doll and my daughter absolutely LOVES her!! She (my daughter) cried when we brought Katya home and now thinks it's all a dream. LOL! She's even kept Katya's name.
Foster moms were wonderful as well! They gave us some great information and tips on making Katya's transition less stressful! They definitely deserve some kudos!!
Please know that if I hear of anyone looking to adopt an animal, I will definitely refer them to Red Lake Rosie! You have an awesome bunch of dedicated people working there and I'm proud to have been given the chance to make a difference in Katya's life!
Thank you again and have a great day!
SK
AND A NOTE TO FOSTER MOMS:
Yes, Katya is adjusting very well! She’s no longer that shy reserved kitten anymore. She doesn’t walk anywhere, she RUNS!! For as little as she is she sounds like a herd of elephants running up/down the stairs. When she’s tired, you pet her and she almost instantly goes to sleep. It’s like mesmerizing to her! LOL!
She is now freely roaming the whole entire house (as of Wednesday night). In fact we hadn’t even introduced her to the basement yet but found her sleeping on the heated floor in the basement bathroom on Wednesday night! She’s certainly not stupid! LOL!
She also LOVES LOVES LOVES her new mommy! As you can see from the pics, she is very comfortable with my daughter. When K goes outside to play, Katya runs around the house looking for her and follows her almost everywhere! She has also taken up with a White Tiger stuffed animal (it’s actually bigger than her!) She pounces on it, bites it and plays with it every day. It’s the funniest thing to watch!
She is a very good little girl and I’m pretty sure she loves her new home as well! She definitely keeps us laughing! I’ll keep you updated with more pics soon.
Hope all is well with you. Have a great weekend!

Mega-transport November 15
We had a giant transport on Sunday November 15 with a total of 3 dogs, 30 puppies and l kitten.
These animals were primarily surrenders at the November clinic so we were overrun and very happy that they all got foster care except for 3 puppies who went to Northwoods Humane Society and Ollie, juvenile vetted shephard who went to Tricounty Humane Society.
SHANIALots of rescues stepped forward and took the puppies, so we are very pleased and grateful.
ABE! DONATIONSDee Dee and Kristen came in Saturday with a load of gifts from the ABE! Fund out of Chicago in memory of a dog named Abe.
Also- much to our surprise we got the 2009 Chevrolet van delivered to the shelter with our beautiful logo painted on it!!
I found out that there were people in the metro who donated to get the logo put on and I want to thank you very much for this. It is BEAUTIFUL.
FLUFFYWe spent the day with Dee Dee, Kristin, Alex and Pat putting tarps on kennels and Dee Dee and Kristin worked through late night cleaning in the cathouse.
ZORROThank you to all the volunteers, donors, and receiving rescues/shelters in behalf of Red Lake animals.
Sincerely, Karen Good and RLRR

Meeko: Mom to the Russian Circus kittens
After we transported the Russian Circus Troupe kittens to foster care, I found out that their mother, who had been found with them at the dump, was also at Karen's looking for foster care. Meeko was spayed at the November clinic and then moved down to the cities. She was adopted within a week by a wonderful young couple referred to me by a friend. Thanks, Marina!
DAY ONE:
Meeko has been doing great. Last night she spent most of the time under our bed but then I woke up during the night to find her asleep with us. Amanda and I both have the day off today and Meeko has been enjoying exploring our apartment and playing with the toys, she really loves those. She's also been eating her dry food, drinking water, and used the litter box so it seems that she's doing very well!
DAY TWO:
Oh she's doing great! She's been using the litter box no problem, and eating consistently. She REALLY loves the toys you sent with and has become very accustomed to the chair I keep at my desk, it seems to be her favorite part of the apartment. She's very social and hasn't returned to under the bed since the first evening, she also sleeps on our bed with us at night. We're so happy to have her and feel it's a perfect match! I've attached a couple pictures that we've taken of her. Thank you so much!

Reflections on a first visit to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue
Kristen made her first visit to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue last weekend. She wrote about the experience for the blog:
In reflecting on Karen Good and Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue, the first thing that comes to mind is how to possibly explain the amount of work Karen puts into these animals. As I am trying to think of a way to describe this effort, it is simply unexplainable. The endless dedication she puts forth to care for these abandoned, abused and unwanted animals is amazing. There are no words that will do justice to explain just how much she does. Being there a weekend is enough to wear a person out and thinking of how Karen does this every day, twice a day, is crazy! The amount of work to run everything is neverending. There is always something that can be done and Karen never stops until the animals' needs are met.
Not only are there surrendered animals, she has her own animals to care for too. Mouser, Clover, Grandpa, Cooper, Snowball, Hazel, Shiloh, Pepper, Julie, Mamma Mia…I can’t even remember all the names but low and behold Karen retains all of this, as well as their personality traits, who has been through what, where they came from and who they do well with. These things are all second nature to her, and it isn’t just her packs, it is the same for all of those she brings in as well.
It was great to have such a sense of need from the animals, but heartbreaking at the same time. It is still difficult for me to imagine what they have been through and what the many others suffer day to day for a lifetime, which in reality is generally a very short brutal life time. They are desperately in need of TLC.
My initial desire to go to Red Lake came from my dog, Cheyenne. I adopted her from RLRR in April and have been amazed at her from the start. We often get people asking about her and telling us how beautiful she is. She has the best disposition and is the perfect match for the dog we already had, Lucky. Having her and loving her so much made me curious to see what went on up at Karen’s. After getting more involved, I started to hear the many stories of different animals. I felt the need to meet this woman. How can there be such a person? She really does exist, and I think she is making a significant difference in the lives of many.
I expected this trip to be hard and make me feel sad about how these animals are treated, but spending time there you begin to realize these are sad situations with a new lease on life. The dogs seem to know this as well. They are timid and shy at first, but when they warm up to you they do more than warm your heart.
My favorite pals from this visit were Mouser, who became my lapdog up at Karen’s house, Ollie who was the sweetest Shepherd mix who snuggled up to me after being too scared to even let me pet him at first and Estelle, who reminded me of my own Lucky baby. Of course, all the puppies are sweethearts, but to see the older dogs that have been through awful situations be so loving and gentle is a truly amazing trait and a credit to their species.
Warm eyes, soft fur, endless love and forgiving hearts-how could anyone ask for more? It grows my desire to do as much as possible to get ahead of the overpopulation problem and constant abuse these poor creatures never deserve to endure. Needless to say I know I’m not going to change the world, but if any of my effort can help save the lives of even a few dogs or cats, it will all be worth it in the end, no matter the price. I now feel a lot more purpose in my life. I look forward to working with Karen again and to the warm welcome given by the dogs living at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

A Pup's Best Friend
Orphaned pup from Ponemah finds a new home thanks to ARVSS.
We LOVE our new addition so much! As you can see he is fitting right in.
In fact I don't think he has spent one night on the floor yet. He is an awesome puppy.
Every night he gets sung to sleep on one of my daughters' beds with a lullaby. We love giving him treats, because he deserves them.
I just wanted to thank you for letting us adopt this puppy. We are so happy to have him. His new name is "Willie" (Wonka)and has been the center of attention for many days.
In fact he went to Nana's house for playtime while we worked on Monday and I had to beg to get him back as my mother was not going to let him leave without a fight! I had to offer up one of my kids in exchange...fair trade! Just kidding, but seriously he has been so easy and a great addition to our family.
Thank you for finding us the perfect pup.

One down, two to go
Three Red Lake dogs share a bed in their foster home.
Dove, in the middle, is a "failed foster". For non-foster-caregivers that may sound like the dog somehow failed, but, in fact, it is the foster caregiver who couldn't give her up and the foster home becomes her forever home. It is a good thing ;-)
On the left is Ellie and on the right is Dahlia who are both up for adoption on our website.
I think they would each like a bed of their own!

Sprinkles/Sofie living it up
Here's an update on our past RLRR foster kitten, Sprinkles (now Sofie):
"Hi Lauren,
Thank you and Mike so much for taking such good care of my kitty while she was in foster care! She is absolutely wonderful and is already very much a part of our family! Sasha and I love her and can't get enough of her :)
She is so curious, playful, social, and cuddly! By now she has explored every corner of the new house and enjoys running around with the speed of light. She likes playing with anything and everything, but a featherstick is her favorite.
And when Sofie gets tired after playing and jumping around, she comes and sits on either mine or Sasha's lap and purrs while we pet her. Our house has definitely become a more fun and happy place since Sofie's arrival."

Regi: From Trash to Treasure
NOTE FROM REGI'S FOSTER HOME:
Just thought I'd let you know that Regi is doing well. He is so sweet and such a little kissy, snuggly thing.
He started playing with toys right away, but I've had to hand feed him otherwise he won't eat. He slept thru the night without a peep.
My dog Olive is trying to get him to play but scares him a bit, I don't blame him!
Do you know what his story is? Where he came from etc?
~ Mary
All Dog Rescue
RESPONSE FROM KAREN:
Hi Mary and thank you for the email.
Regi came from the Red Lake garbage dump where he was left because he had mange and the people no longer wanted him. This sweet boy was found by Polly, one of our committee members, and then he came to the shelter.
He is a very timid boy who needs tlc, for which you are an expert :)
Thank you for loving and caring for Regi- "One man's trash is
another man's treasure" which is the case with Regi.

Bo/Frankie is on the mend
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I was having trouble getting a
picture that did justice to Frankie. But, professional photographers John & Jennifer Adams of Just Pawsitive Photography offered to take pictures of the All Dog Rescue foster dogs and they look great.
Frankie is doing extremely well. He's sweet, cuddly, happy, and ready to take on the world. The stitches were removed from his inner ear when he was neutered and that area healed nicely. The gash around the back of his head healed o.k., but not as well. The options are to expose fresh tissue and stitch him back up or allow the area to scar over. We are going to let it scar over. The little guy has been through enough and we don't want to do anything that will cause him pain if it's not medically necessary.
He must have had close to 100 bites on the rest of his body. Fortunately, most did not puncture the skin and the damaged areas have sloughed off. He looks cute - like a reverse Dalmatian with little patches of white skin showing through his black hair. His back legs only get stiff now after he's done a lot of running, playing fetch, or wrestling other dogs - all of which he loves. I try to keep him from overdoing it, but he feels better and acts younger every day. That dog has some energy! He's come so far in just a few weeks that the leg issues were most likely from the attack, but we are going to have his hips x-rayed to rule out dysplasia.
Frankie wants to meet every human and small dog he sees. He's becoming comfortable around and interested in larger dogs. It won't be long before he's ready to wrestle with the big boys. It will be fun to watch. By the way, he's a genius. He learned to sit and lie down in just a couple of quick sessions and he's working on stay. I had him off-leash when I was out of the city one weekend and he never went out of sight. He
immediately came back when I called him, even when he found a deer trail.
Thanks again for saving Frankie. He's a wonderful dog and you can probably tell I'm crazy about him. All the dogs I've fostered have been great in many ways, but there is something spectacular about the dogs from RLRR!
