Pins for Pets

HELP STRIKE TO PREVENT HOMELESS PETS Red Lake Rosie's Rescue is a member of the Homes For All Pets coalition, a group of Minnesota animal rescue organizations dedicated to working together to reduce pet overpopulation.

Chuck & Don's Pet Food Stores is planning a fundraising event whose goal is to raise $75,000 for spay/neuter activities. The money raised will be shared among participating rescues in the Homes for All Pets coalition.

WHAT IS THE EVENT? The event is Pins for Pets and it's scheduled for August 3rd from 4-6pm at Flaherty's Arden Bowl in Arden Hills. In short, it's a bowling party where up to 216 bowlers will roll strikes, spares and gutterballs to raise money to help spay and neuter animals. Check out http://www.pinsforpets/ for complete details.

Top fundraisers are eligible for some great prizes. The number one fundraiser will receive a $250 gift card and a trophy. Second place gets a $100 gift card; and third place a $75 gift card. There are also prizes for top bowling scores.

Plus there will be guest celebrities like Katie K-9, giveaways to all participants (canvas totes, towels), t-shirts and prizes. Door prizes include Chuck & Don's gift cards, a two-night stay at Madeline Island, puppy kindergarten classes, and a year's worth of free grooming.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Register to bowl on August 3rd at http://www.pinsforpets.org/. The registration fee is $15 (non tax-deductible) and includes the cost of bowling, shoe rental, lunch and beverages. After registering you will be directed to the www.firstgiving.com/pinsforpets page to set up your fundraising page and start securing donations.

Bowling isn’t your strength? No problem! Social butterflies can just show up for the party. It will be a wonderful opportunity to mingle with other Twin Cities animal lovers. Some of the other rescues involved are; Pet Haven, Feline Rescue, Cause for Paws, MN Humane Society, RAGOM, Animal Ark and Minnesota Spay/Neuter Project.

Can’t make it on August 3? You can still help raise money. Go directly to www.firstgiving.com/pinsforpets to set up your own fundraising page. Red Lake Rosie's Rescue also needs volunteers to help promote the event by putting up posters and distributing brochures. We also need one or two volunteers to help at the event. Email Denise at d4luke@gmail.com if you're interested in volunteering.

Animal Clinic July 21-27

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) with its Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS -- also known as The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association) is coming again to Red Lake next week for an animal clinic.

July 21- HSUS/RAVS people arrive in afternoon to set up clinic
July 22-26 clinic in Redby
July 27- Outpatient only in Ponemah (i.e., no neuter/spay)

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue is organizing this event and there will be over 50 volunteers total working at the clinic, needing meals and a place to stay every day all week. The Metro Support team for Rosie's is sending volunteers north mostly for a few days at a time and they are bringing food and other supplies. We hope to transport surrendered animals off the reservation to rescues and shelters at the end of the project.

Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association Field Services

In many parts of the world without daily veterinary services, many people cannot afford to provide routine care for their beloved pets. Sometimes, they don't know that their pets need routine care.

This is where The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA)—formerly known as Rural Area Veterinary Services or RAVS—enters the picture. HSVMA field teams bring veterinary services to poor communities around the globe from Bolivia to Bell County, Kentucky. Volunteer veterinary students work with several professional veterinarians to provide essential services such as sterilizations and vaccinations and educational services such as tutorials on disease prevention and pet care.

Dr. Eric Davis, DVM, heads the HSVMA Field Services program and is a diplomate for both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Before joining The HSUS, Davis was veterinary director of Remote Area Medical (RAM) in Knoxville, Tenn., where he founded the traveling veterinary services program in 1995. RAM was often supported by The HSUS and was assisted by its regional offices. Davis has led teams into some of the neediest regions in the western hemisphere, including parts of Mexico, Guatemala, the Caribbean, Paraguay, Bolivia, Guyana, Guam, Palau, Pohnpei and Kosrae.

On a typical HSVMA site visit, about 12 to 25 veterinary school volunteers and three to five veterinarians and technicians will conduct one or two clinics a day. By the time their multi-day visit or tour is complete, volunteers and staff typically perform up to 300 vaccinations a day and 30 to 60 surgeries per clinic.

HSVMA has benefited not only thousands of animals and their owners, but has also expanded the knowledge of veterinary school students.

"We are exposing future veterinarians to humane work. They need to know that it is right to come to the aid of animals in need," Davis says.

Because its work is never done, HSVMA Field Services is continually looking for two things: more veterinary volunteers and more funds.

Update on Camille and her kittens

It's time for an update on Camille and her kittens who were rescued back in May. Here is what Pet Haven has to report:

Ms Camille has a new name in her present foster home, Hazelnut, which fits her beautiful brown tabby coloring. She's starting to feel better and has lots more energy. She comes for attention, sidling and rubbing on everything as she walks towards you and she stretches way up on her tippy toes as she gets under your hand for more and more pats. Hazelnut loves to play with a small puff ball that belong to the child in her foster home and she comes to snuggle in bed. She's adjusted to the other cats and they to her but her foster mom feels she'd do well as an only cat too. She startles when you move through the house quickly and will duck away but comes back out shortly to see what's happening. We think she lived mainly outside so house noises and people moving around are relatively new to her. Pet Haven asked a lot of her when we added two extra kittens to her litter of 4. She's probably had litter after litter her whole life and those two tykes who really needed her caused another drain on her system. She's slim but gaining weight and feeling better and better - a home of her own would make her recovery complete.

Charlotte is Camille's last kitten. She's ready for adoption and it seems strange that she hasn't been snatched up! She's very cute, likes attention and plays well with another kitten. Perhaps you know of someone looking for a darling little girl to share a forever home?

Abused puppy, Ode

Dear Friends:
We always like to give you the outcome of a bad situation, and in this case we are very optimistic.

This puppy was rescued 2 days ago from an abuse situation at Red Lake. As you can see, the puppy's ears have been badly burned. Ode (pronounced Oh-day), the puppy is doing very well today; this photo was taken this morning. She is already crate trained, eating very well, has been treated for fleas and is on pain meds and antibiotics. She is an absolute doll.

She is going to a Pet Haven foster home on July 19 and will get a good home.

Thank you all so much for helping her and others like her here at Red Lake.

Peace-
Karen Good and Red Lake Rosie's Rescue

The Moxie Smile

Moxie was found on an old truck trail as a young puppy. She had damage to her nose area, and we suspected that she had been shot in the face with perhaps a 22 gun. Anyway- she was found and was very frightened at first. But being hungry, she was not hard to catch. She went to Pet Haven and was adopted by a wonderful family who love her very much.

Here's what her mom wrote:
Moxie got to try corn on the cob this last weekend! She learned QUICKLY how to remove just the kernels from the cob w/ daddy holding it for her.
Mox is very afraid of fireworks, and the safest place is by Daddy. I've been taking 3-4 mile walks on the weekend thru the wooded parks nearby and Moxie is really enjoying that. I would love to clock her speed, cuz man this girl is fast!

The previous owners of our home were golf players. They installed a very large putting green, a sand trap, and this tuft of long grass section. Since the dogs enjoy the coolness of the grassy patch, we don't mow it down. If the ball chances to land in it, Moxie bounces w/ glee in after the ball & will keep diving back down in the grass until she finds the ball.

Maya

A couple of newlyweds added a puppy from Red Lake to their new family and they have reported:

Our puppy (Maya) is doing great. She is spoiled like no other.

She surely looks like a happy dog!

Even better, they wrote again to say:

Oh, another thought, when we get a house we would be in line for another puppy. We would love another shepherd, she is so smart it's not even funny.

Smart and beautiful, I'd say!

They grow up so fast

Lucy & Linus have moved out of their bathroom home and into the office where they can get more lap time and they can look out the windows.

Linus is just four weeks old, but he already weighs a pound and a half. He is comatose after eating and he is not interested in cat food yet because he is getting plenty of mother's milk as an only kitten.

Lucy is so beautiful and sweet. She's very talkative. She's so calm about motherhood; we're sure this is not her first time, but it is her last since she has already been spayed! Feline Rescue will be looking for homes for these two in about two months.
