Loads of litter!

We are so happy to receive a two year's supply of cat litter from the Animal Humane Society (AHS) as arranged by Marilou, the president of MN Paws. It was like winning the Publisher Clearing House Sweepstakes!

With the numbers of cats and the lack of places to send cats this year, we have needed lots of litter. We are going though at least 2 bags of litter per day and that gets very expensive. This is a great blessing for us so we won't have to buy any for a LONG time.

Tom and Nancy once again made the trek to Golden Valley and picked up a truck and trailer load of cat litter on Saturday, January 21st. The load weighed in at 5,000 lbs! Tom, Nancy and Carolyn delivered the load to RLRR on Sunday, January 22nd.

We want to thank AHS, Melissa, Marilou, Jenny, and a special thanks to the O'Sullivans and Carolyn for their continued help in doing all the "tough" work of loading and transporting. Tom's skill at using the forklift helped in the loading process.

Yukon, Jen and Marilou's Act V foster dog from Leech Lake Legacy, did a nice job guarding the mother lode!

Teamwork made the job very easy and it is great to have the litter on site. Thank you all for your great effort.

Dawn at Pennington Humane Society who recently took in the 28 dogs and 2 cats from the Warroad hoarding situation also welcomes the donation of the cat litter as they have many cats to care for there as well. Karen made a delivery of cat litter there this week and Dawn sent back catfood to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. Working together can help everyone!

Karen wanted me to forward a few photos from a chow and litter delivery today, Jan. 14, 2012. The chow was donated from Pet Haven/Chaska Shed, and the litter from Golden Valley Humane Society (AHS).

What a pleasant surprise!

NANCY & FIONAThere were lots of puppies and dogs needing a ride out to make room for more, (as the usual January puppy litters are now needing rescue) when I received a nice e-mail from Nancy that said "Do you need help? Ryan and I would like to come up this week."

RYANWhen they arrived on January 4th, they were loaded down with animal food and supplies as usual. I was just coming from Red Lake with a load of animals that needed to be tucked in.

Ryan helped with the new arrivals while Nancy took care of the cats.

The next morning they left with Anna, Lizzy, Dove, Leo and Luna on board to Tricounty Humane Society and a litter of chihuahua puppies to Twin City Pet Rescue.

Thank you Nancy and Ryan for coming to help Red Lake animals just in the nick of time.

Buddy: Free at last

"Buddy lived a miserable existence for at least 5 years in a too-small crate 20-plus hours a day in a back room with the door shut. When he was allowed outside he was put on a 5-foot chain. His owner recently came into financial difficulty and is not able to provide food for him. When I got him he was emaciated and had a severe infestation of fleas.

Despite all Buddy has been through he has a wonderful disposition. He is friendly and happy. He gets along with all other animals small and big. He shows no food aggression despite not being fed well the past couple of months. He loves to explore the outdoors and run through the fields.

Buddy is trainable. He knows how to sit. He likes to ride in the car now. He was nervous at first. He has gotten very playful and likes to fetch now too."

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue was happy to help by getting Buddy neutered, vaccinated and placed with All Dog Rescue.

With tearful eyes, Jennifer said her goodbyes to Buddy as he left with DeeDee. We are so thankful for Jennifer and all she does to help animals in her area as well as fostering often for Red Lake Rosie's.

She worked on getting Buddy for years, and finally succeeded! We wish him all good things.

Update on Sully

Sully had a great morning! He already has 85% vision in his right eye and that percentage should continue to increase in the next weeks. Getting that cone off felt awfully good, too :-)

Long Ride to Rescue

It all started in a social setting on Saturday, January 7th when I was approached by Rose, a Red Lake woman who lives in Oklee, a neighboring white small town. We chit chatted for a while and then Rose directed the conversation to "dog talk" which is normal.

She lamented over a puppy she had given to a lady who lives on the Mille Lacs Reservation. The puppy now has a large bulge on the gut and I told her perhaps it was a hernia. I began to ask her about her animals. She shared she has an unspayed small breed dog named Baby Girl. The she asked if I could spay her, and of course I said yes. I shared the vet phone number.

I told her further about the dangers of giving people puppies as they would perhaps not get good care and live a bad life. To put it bluntly, I told her we drag small breeds out of the garbage dump regularly. She shared nothing about having a litter of puppies at home.

Then first thing Monday morning I began to get calls regarding a litter of 5 puppies that needed rescue from Rose's residence in Oklee, so I responded and got the puppies. Rose had already set up an appointment to spay Baby girl so I was off to the vet.

By Tuesday morning Dee Dee had gotten Twin City Pet Rescue committed to taking the litter as well as a ride out Thursday. Tuesday I picked up the now spayed Baby Girl and returned her to Rose in Oklee.

Some people may wonder why RLRR would drive 88 miles 2 days in a row over a litter of puppies and an unspayed dog? The Indian community, you see is not limited to geographical boundaries. Our people live all over the map and they all seem to know about Red Lake Rosie's and call on us.

A wise woman, Joan Lawson, told me once when we first started rescuing puppies back in 2005. She asked "Why don't you spay and neuter to get to the root of the problem?" Well at that time I thought that was an insurmountable task to think we could actually neuter and spay on the level that we could actually change the companion animal population on the reservation, and the more vast Indian community.

Well now I am a believer and together with the team of supporters who also believe and high volume neuter spay clinics and the ongoing use of vouchers at the vet when clinics are not available are making the impossible--possible.

Earl & Blonde

Many Red Lake community members take the care of their dogs and cats seriously, as is the case with Earl.

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue got a call a week ago from Earl, a Red Lake elder who has a dog which he loves very much named Blonde. Blonde lies the good life indoors with Earl at the outlet, a remote area on the north side of the Red Lake Reservation, the source of the Red Lake River.

Earl is ill and has to go through surgery and was concerned about Blonde, and how would she be cared for during his stay at the hospital.

We had spayed Blonde at the community clinic years ago. Earl continues to bring Blonde in for vaccination boosts and checkups. He feeds her very well -- perhaps too well. She spends her life indoors warm and toasty and has become Earl's #1 companion.

Earl asked if I would take care of her for a week, and I readily agreed as I know how much Blonde means to Earl. He wanted her to be safe until he gets home. We do not board animals, but how could I turn Earl and Blonde away?

Today Earl arrive with Blonde, who is not a happy camper right now, but will be in good hands.

It is so great to know pet guardians who are really taking good care of their pets and love them dearly.

Update on Winter Fundraiser with Matching Funds

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue is so grateful!!! In the last month, we have received just over $20,000 in gifts large and small from our loyal supporters. The amount is more than enough to earn the Matching Funds of $10,000 offered by Friends of Flicka and the Lawson Family Foundation.

The money will allow us to pay our vet bills and costs to maintain the shelter and continue our mission of rescue and education through the winter.

One of the special projects we hope to do is to purchase plexiglass for weatherizing some or all of the dog kennels for next winter. That way they would be warmer, the dogs would be able to see out, and we would not have to do the tarping each fall- we would simply install the plexiglass.

We have ten 2/pod kennels so that would be a project. Eash 2/pod would need 6 large sheets of plexiglass.

Eventually we will need re-roof the cathouse as we have some leaks.

We would also like to create a little outdoor cattery with lots of windows and places for cats to enjoy the fresh air -- maybe one about the size of one of our dog kennels with lots of shelving and play area.

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue doesn't have money coming in from adoptions, because almost all of the animals we rescue go to other organizations for care and placement. We foster and adopt out just a few animals each year. This system works very well, but it means we need more help from our supporters throughout the year.

Help needed for animals rescued from hoarders in Warroad

WARROAD, Minn. - Twenty eight dogs and two cats are being housed at the Pennington County Humane Society after they were rescued from the home of alleged dog hoarders in Warroad.

Police Chief Wade Steinbring confirmed to the Warroad Pioneer that the animals had been kept indoors for nearly 3 years, and that the basement of the home occupied by a male owner and his female companion was filled with an estimated two to three feet of feces.

There was also feces on the walls, stairs, countertops, and just about every surface in the home, according to Steinbring.

The animals were rescued from the home on January 10 by humane volunteers, who took them to the Pennington County Humane Society for care and evaulation.

Neighbors were reportedly not aware of the situation because there was no odor, little noise, and they never saw any of the animals outside.

The Warroad City Council met last week to declare the home a public nuisance and health hazard, and ordered board-up operations to begin.

RESPONSE:
Once it is cleared thru the courts that we can rehome the dogs, we will definitely be looking to other groups to help out with them. They are still very skittish & under-socialized. We are short on kennel help right now & just don't have the time or resources to spend with them to get them comfortable with different situations. In my opinion, most of them will be ok to adopt out if given sufficient independent time with patient people.

It's just not going to happen here.

Puppies!
Several weeks ago, All Dog Rescue got a plea for help from shelter partner Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. A very pregnant stray had found her way to RLRR, and they were hoping to get her into foster care before the puppies were born. All Dog Rescue fosters Shelley and Craig immediately said they would provide sweet Jewels with a safe, loving foster home. Everyone was on pins and needles in the few days it took to arrange transport, but everything worked out - Jewels waited to give birth until she was safe and sound in her foster home.

Here is proud momma Jewels with her puppies, now around 3 weeks old. Once they are old enough, the puppies and Jewels will all be spayed/neutered and available for adoption. In the meantime, you can find lots more pictures and some video of Jewels and her puppies at All Dog Rescue on Facebook.

Mike & Lauren to the Rescue again!

Mike and Lauren made a trip to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue on Thursday, January 5th and stayed until Saturday, January 7th. It was another productive visit getting all the kennels stripped and fresh straw applied. Karen also got a new computer to replace her dead one and Mike set it up during his visit.

We made a trip to Red Lake to get 4 unspayed female dogs, from which we had rescued litters from previously, to get them spayed. Mike and Lauren are very skilled at catching dogs, especially those that are shy and hard to catch. We unfortunately got there too late for one female, as she died the day before we arrived.

Mike and Lauren successfully crated the 3 dogs and we tucked them in at the shelter until they could get to the vet.

When Mike and Lauren left they took Major, the German Shepherd known as the Gentle Giant, to Patti Simonette of Second Hand Dogs and 2 lovely flamepoint cats- Winter and Snowball- in foster care for Pet Haven.

We are so happy to have so many great volunteers who help the Red Lake animals and community so much!

Bittersweet rescue: Spike's Story

Spike was hidden away in the corner of a yard, not visible to anyone walking by. His kennel was a small enclosure of fencing. The content of the kennel area was filth, debris and excess of feces.

There was no water or food anywhere. When we found Spike in his kennel, we also found a puppy, dead from starvation.

As you can see in his photos, Spike was also extremely starved and dehydrated. When we offered Spike a small amount of food and lots of water, his tail finally came from between his legs to a high wagging! We were so happy for him!

We took the starved and deceased puppy to our vet for proper “burial”.

Spike has been at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue for two weeks now and is gaining weight and has been neutered and vaccinated. We are so thankful that he leaves for foster care through Pet Haven on Sunday, January 15th.

Thank you to rescues and transporters for helping these animals who would otherwise have little hope for life. You help us make a difference. Spike is so happy to have love, food, water and clean straw to sleep in!

Saving the best for last

I have been fostering cats (usually mom cats and kittens) for a decade and I have lots of friends who also foster. We have discussed from time to time how impossible it is to predict which cats will be adopted first and which will wait.

CHARLOTTE & AMELIACharlotte came to me from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue with a belly full of kittens, ticks in her coat and a BB in her butt. I took care of the ticks right away, she had four lovely kittens in just a few days and the BB was removed when she was spayed.

CHARLOTTE From that humble beginning, she came to be a favorite at my house. When friends stop by they can't believe I still have her because she is so great-- quiet, friendly, pretty. She is a medium-sized gray tuxedo cat with round green eyes set in her very round face. She is patient with me when I am too busy, but adores some alone time for petting.

AMELIA Amelia is Charlotte's daughter from that last batch of kittens. She is full-grown and possibly a little bigger than her mom. She must take after her Dad's side of the family because she has the long legs, angular features and almond-shaped eyes of the Oriental breed. Her dilute calico coat is super soft and she is a snuggler without shame.

I'm so anxious for them to find their permanent, perfect home. The longer they stay, the more I love them, but I want to continue to foster so I can't adopt. Their photos don't do them justice; they often blink for the camera, but they are both very beautiful with beautiful souls. I hope you or someone you know may be looking for a cat just like one or both of them!

The good news is that when the right adopters come along, the waiting is all worthwhile. January is the biggest month for adoption of cats. My theory is that people are looking for a loving companion after the stress of the Holidays. Whatever the reason, my fingers are crossed that the time is near for my dear Charlotte and Amelia.

Gentle Giant

During the August MN SNAP clinic, we ran the Ponemah shuttle to pick up animals to be neuter/spayed. On August 22nd shuttle, 2 male shepherds were surrendered. We named them Major and Captain. Both dogs were intact, malnourished, and suffering from mange and hair loss. They soon were off to the clinic and there began a process of healing and restoration.

Major was a large-boned german shepherd, and at first was quite subdued and lethargic. He was neutered and vaccinated and began treatment with ivermectin, revolution, and lots of great food and clean water. We soon discovered a bad case of diarrhea and began a treatment for giardia as well. Major was literally a rack of bones, and looked rather hopeless, but proved once again that when given a chance the animals in the worst shape will heal and become the beautiful creatures they were meant to be. We should not let first impressions deceive us.

On arrival Major weighed in at 58 pounds. Well, needless to say Major LOVED to eat and in particular all the great food we get at the shelter. Soon the sparse hair grew in thick and shiny and Major gained at least 42 pounds. His personality shined through and he came to be know as the Gentle Giant. He was a very playful and happy guy. He had many friends at the shelter, and I personally grew to love this big boy very much.

After 4 months at the RLRR shelter, Major left on Saturday, January 7th in the backseat of Mike and Lauren's car enroute to the care of Patti at Second Hand Dogs. It was hard to let him go, but again this was only the first part of his journey.

Thank you to all our supporters and volunteers who make this new life possible for a great animal, who otherwise would be deceased today. It makes it all worthwhile.

Sully: Post-surgery

Sully's surgery went really well!!!!!

I wrapped him snugly in a blanket and brought him home late this afternoon. He was wimpering so pitifully, as though he wanted me to know he did not have a good day; however, he has no idea of the new wonders that await him in the near future.

He has a serious medication regimen, and the next two weeks are crucial, but he is already wandering, eating a little, and trying to scratch his cone off. He is supposed to rest quietly for two weeks, no steps, running, jumping off furniture or rough playing. I set up a bed for him in a spare bedroom, but he cried and and almost scratched the door down. He's not used to being alone, so I just bring his little bed wherever I go or hold him on my lap, like I'm doing right now. We go back for a check up tomorrow.

Time for another round of eye drops & pills. He really is a tough little sport. How lucky for Sully that Karen was there to rescue him and give him the start to a whole new life.

Sully has eye surgery today

NOTE FROM FOSTER:
Here are some pictures of Sully playing with some of his friends, former Red Lake dogs some of you might recognize. Sometimes Sully gets confused and ends up by himself, but most of the time he is right in the middle of the fun. Every day he seems to become more sure of himself, stronger, and more energetic.

Tuesday, January 10th is the big day when little Sully will have his eye surgery. I am very excited. Hopefully everything will go as predicted and our little guy will be on his way to recovering vision in his right eye. A huge huge thank you goes out to all of you who so generously sent in donations and made this surgery a reality.

I have been treating Sully's eyes with drops twice a day in preparation for the operation,and there will be a recovery period where Sully will need to wear the cone and rest quietly. He will have a few post op visits, including one the day following his surgery.

Sully is such a gentle happy spirit, easy to work with, easy to love. I will post an update after the surgery.

Sully thanks you all for thinking about him and sending up positive wishes and prayers for the best results possible.

Remember Eddie?

At a Red Lake clinic back in the spring of 2010...

"SPECIAL ED
Special Ed's family brought 2 other dogs in and when a volunteer was helping them get the dogs out of the car, the volunteer asked about the pup. The owners said nah, he's too young and the other dogs had just attacked him. They had to talk them into letting him get checked out and neutered. It wasn't until examination that they learned that he had a deformity to his skull.

COCONUT HELMET FOR SPECIAL EDEd had a puncture wound on top of his head and, upon further examination, Dr. Roni discovered he has a soft spot on his head and his skull is separated halfway down his nose. They will be building him a helmet to prevent further injuries--the coconut shell was just a joke :-) Unfortunately he will need to be in a helmet for the rest of his life, but, on the bright side, vet tech Lindsay from Akin Hills Animal Hospital plans to care for him in her own home!"

Eddie was about to get even luckier. He was featured on the blog in 2010 and 2011 as "Casey" with his three dog siblings in their Christmas photo card.

Then Karen received a note from Eddie/Casey's adopter, Tammy:

Just curious - do you know who Casey is? He was "Eddie"..the 3 month old puppy that had a puncture wound in his head, and they found out his skull wasn't completely formed yet. I think they termed it "fontanel", and he had to wear a coconut helmet! Well, he did for awhile, but not long - we couldn't keep it on him, and he didn't like it. So it was a matter of just careful monitoring of him with all the other dogs until it healed.

One other interesting thing about Casey - 80% of the time he has a stuffed animal in his mouth. He's either playing tug of war with Dylan or Phoenix, or just carrying it around. Most don't have stuffings - he tries to open a hole & pull out the stuffing as fast as he can!

I made the mistake of buying an indestructible squeaky toy. He loves to wake me up with that - and it truly is indestructible...what did I do? :)

Sure love these guys and girl - not sure what I'd do without them.

Golden Nugget for the New Year

Check it out, Nugget's tongue through her bone with cool glasses on!

What a year!!! One year ago New Year's eve, we got to bring home Nugget.

She is a wonderful addition to the family. She loves playing outside with the kids. Chasing butterflies, moths, grasshoppers, & blowing leaves are her favorite things to do when she is outside.

Nugget loves going camping with the family.

Inside she loves chewing on her squeaky toy and devouring her bones.
THANKS all of you who volunteer at Rosies!!! Without you we would not have Nugget in our life.

What a life!!!

Precious Jewels

On December 12th, Red Lake Rosie's Rescue got a call from Ponemah about a stray very pregnant shepherd mix I named Pearl. Sarah made the call and asked for RLRR to come to Ponemah and pick up Pearl, as she was about to give birth to puppies, and she had no shelter.

Kathy and Karen responded and went the next day to find a very lovely nice girl with her belly practically dragging on the ground. She was very small built and very friendly. When the plea went out for a foster home, All Dog Rescue responded right away and all we needed was a ride for her.

Thankfully, Nancy Blanck answered the call and came from the metro loaded down with food and supplies on Friday, December 16th. Nancy worked in the cathouse and helped with the dogs and left the following morning with Pearl (renamed Jewels) riding shotgun in the front seat looking like a giant pumpkin. Jewels went to her foster mom Shelly for All Dog. Also riding out were 2 puppies enroute to Tricounty and one injured dog to Act V.

NANCYWe are so thankful that we have transporters that drop everything and come to help the animals. Also for the rescues and shelters that take the animals and help them on to a new life.

RIDING SHOTGUNPearl/Jewels got out just in time to give birth to her puppies in the comfort of Shelly's care on Thursday, December 22nd.

JEWELS (fka PEARL) AND NEWBORN PUPSUPDATE FROM FOSTER HOME:
Hi Karen
I just wanted to update you on Pearl (I am calling her Jewels since I had previously had a foster dog named Pearl).

She delivered 10 babies last night. The 10th was somewhat of a surprise. The vet x-rayed her on Monday and said there were nine babies. After she delivered the 9th one, we waited a while and, when it appeared all was done, we cleaned up her whelping box and then finally went to bed. Well, to our surprise, she delivered a 10th after we went to bed. Sadly, that one did not make it. In all, she had 6 boys, 4girls (one of the boys died).

The girls are named Ruby, Jade, Opal and Coral.
The boys are named Heatley, Setoguchi (Guchi for short), DJ, Colton and Warren.

TWO DAYS OLDI have attched a picture from this morning. You can't see all the pups (one is hiding under her rear leg) but you get a glimpse anyway. We will weigh them and take individual shots later today.

All seem to be doing well. Jewels ate this morning and went out to potty so I think she is feeling a bit better to not be carrying that load any more.

They are pretty big pups for how many there were and given that Jewels is not a huge dog herself. She weighed 55 pounds on Monday before delivery. She now probably weighs between 40-45 pounds. The smallest pup, Jade, weighed 11.6 ounces, the largest pup, Ruby, weighed 15.4 ounces. They all weigh between 29.5 ounces and 35.2 ounces. In all, as of today (Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012) we have a total of 17.83 pounds of puppy! All of them are gaining about 2-3 ounces a day.

ELEVEN DAYS OLDJewels is a very good mama! She is so friendly to all the visitors that have come to see the cute little ones. We are blessed to have her here with us. This is only the second litter we have had in our home and my husband seems to think he wants to be a canine midwife now! Oh dear! Sounds like trouble.

UPDATE FROM PET HAVEN:
George came to us as a smaller kitten, maybe 6-7 weeks. He had been 'run over' by 3 vehicles on the road - he was not hurt, not even knocked over. Someone stopped and was able to pick him up and a child named him GW.

He has been adopted and settled in right away with a child, 2 dogs and another cat. He follows the child around all the time.

His name is Mickey now, all the pets have 'M' names. The owner said he enjoys bossing the dogs around, too.

MN PAWS AT FUNDRAISERRed Lake Rosie's Rescue had a pleasant visit with new friends from MN PAWS (Minnesota Progressive Animal Welfare Society), Dr. Melissa, Angela, and Stephanie. DeeDee met them at the Medina fundraiser recently and she accompanied them to the RLRR shelter on Saturday, December 3rd.

We had a busy day and the vet team immunized and wormed 13 kittens, 3 small dogs, 3 large dogs, and 7 puppies.

They also helped with the dog and cat chores and brought gifts of medicines, food, and supplies to the shelter.

When they left, they took a small long-haired chihuahua named April (now called April May) and I've already received an update from Angie:

"April May is already in a foster-to-adopt home with one of our good clients. She is such a happy little girl, and has another little chihuahua-mix brother in her foster home. I miss her...lol, I am the biggest foster failure so it's a good thing she went to her new foster home so quick. Once we get her teeth cleaned, she will be up for adoption, and I am pretty sure her new foster mom will adopt her:)"

The MN Paws Rescue group also met Victor, a lab mix dog who has a old break in his leg and he walks oddly. They are hoping to get him some orthopedic help in the future.

The Mn Paws team would like to be supportive of Red lake animals on a continual basis for which we are appreciative.

Dee Dee came to the shelter Sunday, December 4th, and took a load of animals out to Tricounty, Minnesota pitbull Rescue, Feline Rescue, and Pet Haven. Thank you, DeeDee, for all your hard work and networking for RLRR.

Three of these four dogs came from Red Lake -- Remember their formal portraits from last year?. They have had the chance to achieve their full potential and they are obviously happy and healthy (See this previous post with the Red Lake BEFORE photos of Dylan and Phoenix/Cinnamon). Attached is a 2011 Christmas Card from 3 Red Lake angels. They are all doing very well - they all love to play in the snow (now that we got a little!).

Phoenix (aka Cinnamon) is teaching Casey to hunt rabbits - it seems to be her life long dream!

Luckily she hasn't caught any, but she's teaching Casey to stand very still and look in the distance - it's funny seeing them standing together, almost with identical stances!

Dylan is doing well too - he prefers to sit and watch them - chasing things doesn't interest him. He'd prefer to "supervise"!

Apollo still tries to chase his tail and is beginning to bark (thanks to Casey, who is teaching Phoenix to bark too!). She never barked before Casey taught her how! It's so fun to watch them learn from each other!

I've attached some other "fun" pictures of them too!

They are such a joy - thank you so much for saving them! I admire the energy and determination you have to save these beautiful animals.

Zuzu is off to her forever home

Rescued by Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as Delores, this pup moved to Act V and was fostered by Marilou, Ahnung & Legacy. Now she is going to her forever home in time for the Holidays.

UPDATE FROM MARILOU:
Zuzu is going to be picked up in about an hour by her new family. When I talked to B~(her new mom) earlier today she told me that they "are so excited they can hardly stand it!" Her husband G~ is coming by after work to pick her up.

Here a few photos from just a few minutes ago ... thank you Act V for taking her into your foster program and for trusting me (and my pack of pups) to help rehabilitate this sweet girl. She's come a long way and will definitely be missed!

Timber and pups

Timber came as a surrender at the September neuter/spay clinic. She had a litter of 7 tiny newborn puppies. She came to Avis' house in Redby as a stray. Avis is one of our people in the community that loves animals and looks out for strays. She has surrendered many homeless animals to the shelter and also has transported many all the way from Redby to the shelter 37 miles away.

Jennifer W. of Roseau was at the clinic as a volunteer, and took Timber and her new babies to her home and cared for them until they were weaned.

Her foster mom dearly loves Timber and has lots of great things to say about her. She brought the little family to the shelter and Timber went to All Dog foster home and the 7 puppies went to Tricounty Humane Society on November 13th with Lisa's transport.

Thank you Avis, Jenny, Erin, Lisa, All Dog and Tricounty for helping this little family before the cold winter strikes.

He still sings to the TV and loves to sit and watch TV after his walks.

Tiny lives worth saving

The kittens are doing well.

TINY TIM/TINA/MERIWEATHERTiny Tim is Tiny TINA (actually we're calling her Meriweather). It appears that she may have been exposed to distemper virus in the uterus. She has what we call vestibular disease.

We think she'll learn to adjust for her disability. She's getting stronger every day.

There are 3 girls and 1 boy in the litter and they are probably 4 weeks now.

The woman who took the white mama cat and her 6 kittens this summer from the woods is fostering them now. She's one of our vet techs at work.

They keep getting stronger and they are even starting to eat on their own. We're glad Karen let us know about them.

Tiny orphan kittens at garbage dump

It was a cold windy Thursday, November 17th and we got a phone call at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that there was a box of tiny kittens at the Circle Pines garbage dump. An elder who was dumping garbage saw them and called.

Geri and Karen had been in Red Lake earlier that day, so we called immediately to Kristie and Darwin, residents near the Circle Pines area and thankfully they responded right away and found the kittens. Darwin and Kristie brought them to the shelter within the next hour and we began to feed them warm milk in a bottle. They were so cold and their body temperatures were dropping.

They were all lethargic and we worried about them all, and in particular the little siamese we called "Tiny Tim" (not even sure that it was a male) we just called him Tiny Tim as he seemed to be paralyzed. We were sure he needed a Christmas miracle.

TINY TIMGeri took care of Tiny Tim and kept him warm for the first night by having him uder her sweatshirt, then on to a hot water bottle. It took several hours before he megan to move around and be more alert. Well, they all improved and Tiny Tim on day 2 started to be able to walk a little better, but was still losing his balance.

Dr. Vickie, Act V once again came to the rescue and took the little kittens on a special transport on November 20th with the O'Sullivans and Barbie.

CHYNAAlso on transport are Chumi Bear to foster care with Linda at SHH and Chyna, little pitbull puppy also found at Circle Pines went to Laura of Mn Pitbull Rescue.

CHUMI BEARChumi Bear was found on the playground of the Red Lake Elementary School by a teacher. The kids on the playground called the puppy Chum-Chum and since he looked like a bear, we called him Chumi Bear. When the teacher saw Chum-Chum she called RLRR shelter, and when we did not get back to her that day, she took Chumi Bear home with her after school. Quickly she could see that he was ill, so RLRR met her at school the next day and took Chumi to the shelter. He would not eat, so he was taken to the vet in Gonvick and spent a couple of days there and then returned to the shelter where he continued to improve. He left for his foster home on the 20th.

New friends and old

We are happy to have more old friends and new friends visit Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. On November 12th we had a special guest Lisa visit the shelter. Her friend Erin rented a cargo van and Lisa drove it packed with food and supplies from Chuck and Don's picked up and loaded with the help of Dee Dee. Our cupboards were practically bare at that time and the cat and dog kibble was a real blessing.

Lisa met many of the dogs and puppies, and on Sunday November 13th took a large transport out including 20 puppies and 3 adult dogs to the metro to meet various rescues there.

Mike was also at the shelter from the weekend working with the dogs and cats, as well as preparing the shelter for winter.

We enjoyed a meal together with Lisa at the Riverroad Casino on Saturday night which was a real treat.

Poco: Home for the Holidays??

Lovely, soulful Poco came from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to Pet Haven where she is in foster care and looking for her forever home. She is doing great and her fosters love her.

PETFINDER:
*Hobbies: *Playing with other dogs, playing with people, napping, laying in the shade, and following the ladies, I am a ladies' lady.

*Commands/Tricks: *Poco knows "Sit, Down, & Come"; and is working on "shake"

*Crate / Potty Trained:*100% crate and house trained.

*Activity Level: *Poco will play with other dogs and with you, but will decide when she is done. If you are relaxed, she finds a place near you to lay down. Poco enjoys going for walks.

*Fun things I do: *I will cuddle with you if you let me. I will also lay on your feet and keep them warm if you let me.

*Socialization/who I currently live with:* Poco currently lives with a two large sized young dogs, Poco would be fine living without other dogs.

*My Ideal Family:* My ideal family would include me in whatever they are doing. I do not know about cats yet so that is a mystery. Kids would be fun though. And I could live with another dog or be your only pup. I am pretty easy going. Just looking for a place to call home.
POCO BEFORE:
October 2nd, we rescued this poor girl I call Poco from the Red Lake Reservation. She is very sweet, but was so starved and dehydrated you could see every rib in her body and her hip bones were protruding.

She was so hungry and had an eye infection.

She lived at a place in Ponemah that had been deserted for over a month. She had no
food and only water she could find in ditches and puddles.

She ran in the woods the first time we were there. Rescuers are Karen, Geri and Cathy.

Poco spent several weeks at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue then was kindly taken into foster care by Pet Haven.

We are so happy that we found Poco before winter came. Thank you for supporting RLRR. The animals are so happy and thankful, you can tell by their sweet spirit!

Update on "Sight for Sully"

Cheyenne update

This update on Cheyenne Alicia is so great. Mike and I picked her up a year ago in Barton's Projects. Her owner did not want her and turned in 2 dogs that day, of which Alicia was one.

UPDATE FROM ADOPTERS:
Just another note on Cheyenne....

She's still doing great....we keep talking about how none of you rescuers would even recognize her now. She loves to eat. She's filled out nicely, but not obese: she's too active outside wrestling and running with her canine brother Damon every day. Her coat is shiny and her eyes are wide and bright. She sleeps at the foot on our bed with Damon at night, though sometimes she is miss independent and prefers the isolation of her crate at the end of the bed.

You should see her at mealtime. We have an Audubon bird clock in our kitchen. Every hour a different bird sings to ring in the hour. The 3:00 bird is the cardinal, which signals it is dinner time. They both run into the kitchen to eat. Chey runs in and plops herself down in front of the food cabinet, so as not to miss the meal. She and DAmon eat in the kitchen together three feet apart from each other without a problem. In fact, when they eat, the cats are behind them also eating at the same time in their spots.

She is very much a Husky. She likes to sing and talk everyday. She greets us every evening at the door with a song when we come home from work. Sometimes, she comes into the house singing. She has become protective of her family and can be heard and seen barking at the wildlife on our property or noises she hears outside their fenced portion of the yard. Sometimes she starts the barking, or she backs up Damon when he begins barking. It is comical watching them race out to the back of the fenced yard when we let them out, so they can scare something away or let others know they're there. When she and Damon hear the coyotes, they bark at them. She loves jumping at the frogs but doesn't hurt them.

Cheyenne is devoted to Damon. She hates riding with him in the car because he is so crazy about his rides and jumps all about, sometimes on top of her, but she won't be separated from him. She's just as devoted to the cats. When she's outside and they're let out into the yard, she follows them around and sits or lies down by their side, whether they want her nearby or not. She won't go into the house when they're still outside unless we command her to. When she is let back out she races to check on them. If she doesn't see them come back in the house, she races around the house to find them and only settles down once she sees them safe. The boy cat Charlie loves to interact with the dogs and is always playing with them causing Chey to howl and sing at him.

She's become quite affectionate and isn't shy about seeking out individual attention and affection from us. Little by little each day, she comes more and more out of her shell and has developed into a more beautiful little girl. She is no longer afraid of being hugged and looks forward to her daily family hug in which Mr. Silva and I hug each other and hug each dog too at the same time. She's less afraid of Damon lying so close to and on top of her. She used to jump and run away when he first did that. Now she's more relaxed around him. She also doesn't hesitate to growl at him when he gets too rough with her, but she's not vicious or mean in any way. The two dogs are perfect together and great for each other. Damon has helped us bring her out of her shell, and she has helped him calm down a bit.

Cheyenne has come so far, considering that she was an outside dog for so long without bonding to anyone, she has done great. She is bonded to us now like glue and we to her. It is difficult to believe that she wasn't always with us. In another week marks the anniversary of the date Red Lake Rosie rescued her, which we'll mark as her third birthday here. We're so very glad we found her. We knew she'd move into the house without much difficulty and she did. All she needed was the encouragement to do so, understanding, patience and love. And she is a perfect example of that too, especially with her hyper, social butterfly canine brother Damon. He wants to play all the time, and sometimes, she just doesn't. She likes to lie down and smell the grass and listen to the sounds outside. Sometimes she just wants to conserve her energy. She's a true Husky; if it isn't on her agenda, it'll just have to wait until she is ready.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that Cheyenne Alicia is doing well. She has developed a food allergy and can no longer tolerate wheat or grain, but lives the high life of having to eat duck and venison dog food for each meal.

Addedum to update....we forgot to say how very, very much Cheyenne enjoys living in the house. From the comfy spot on the sofa to her comfy spot on our king sized bed to the cozy spot in her very own crate, Chey (pronounced shy) loves inside living.

She loves getting her belly rubbed. And she loves giving kisses to her forever mommy and daddy on command and off. Whenever we put our face to hers and say, "kissy, kissy, kissy" or not, she gives us licks on the face. She is adorable. She loves chewing on a rib bone after a rib dinner we enjoy or chewing on a rawhide bone that Damon 'broke in' for her.

We took some photos this evening while they shared a paper plate of some swiss steak. Table food is a treat. True to her Husky spirit, Chey LOVES seafood. As evidenced by the photos, Damon and Cheyenne are bonded and quite comfy with one another, enough to share a plate together. Enjoy!

There have been two dogs named Rosie who have acted as namesakes for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. Rosie #1 retired to Havenwood Care Center in 1999 where she offers unconditional love to all.

ROSIEKAREN RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL FROM HAVENWOOD:
Rosie #1 is alive and well! She will be turning 14 years old on the 15th of November --- at least that is our best guess. We gave her a birthday based on the day she first came to our Facility when we estimated her to be about 2 years of age.

When Kathy, who originally brought Rosie to Havenwood retired last year, I took over her care. She knew Rosie was in good hands because I was her Activity Aide for several years and had fallen in love with Rosie from the start. I took over Kathy's position as Activity Director, so Rosie is still in my office. I take her home every night and have almost since I started there as she just took to me right away.

Anyway, we are having a birthday party for Rosie in our Rainbow Room at Havenwood, and I would like to invite you to be there. Really hope to see you there!

It was a gala affair! Nancy O'Sullivan, Carolyn May, and Karen Good
attended the 14th birthday party on November 15th during our first snowstorm of the season. It was evident that this little pit bull/shepherd mix has won a lot of hearts at Havenwood Care Center over the past 12 years.

Both of Rosie's caretakers, Kathy and Belinda, were at the party. Rosie was adorned in her birthday hat and greeted guests while her friends enjoyed cake and ice cream.

Rosie had her own cake made up of yummy canned dog food with 14 milkbones wrapped in her favorite chicken treats!

We all sang "Happy Birthday" followed by a number of songs in her honor.

We are honored to be invited to this party. We are proud of Rosie's years of service as a therapy dog bringing joy and companionship to many elderly and the employees as well. We are also so respectful of all the years of commitment and love shown to Rosie by Kathy and Belinda.

KATHY & BELINDAThis is a testimony to how animals that are considered disposable or worthless to some people are real treasures to others. Rosie has a great life thanks to the many great people at Havenwood!!

The party was a fine tribute to this little girl who has represented Red Lake Rosie's Rescue well.

In her birthday card today I mentioned that Rosie has paved the way to a better life for many other animals from RLRR. She has touched the hearts and souls of so many humans and furry friends, and has left a lasting gift of love.

I am so glad I finally got to meet her and spend a little time with her. A darling face, soft eyes.....she must have a ton of stories to share.

It is unbelievable how many Residents know and appreciate Rosie. I have some that come to our Activity office daily just to say hi and talk to her.

Pretty much all family members that come in also know her and acknowledge her as they pass by. She gets a lot of attention and I am always by her to make sure she is safe and cared for.

I will take care of her to the end as she is my special girl and I think you could see from today that she is mine, and that I love her so very much. Thank You for rescuing her and letting me love her and make her life wonderful.

POTBELLY PUPSColleen and Jeanette visited Red Lake Rosie's Rescue October 28th - 30th helping weatherize the dog kennels and help out with the chores.

KENNEL PLASTIC REINFORCEMENTWe got lots of work done. Colleen tarped in puppy pens and large kennels, while Jeanette worked on those that were enclosed in plastic previously.

Beautiful German Shepherd Holly

Holly, a purebred German Shepherd arrived at the Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as a stray in September. She had mange and was malnourished on arrival. Later at the vet, we discovered that she had been spayed at one of our previous clinics but later was thrown away by her owners.

Well, the good news is that Holly left on November 13th for Second Hand Hounds in the care of Patti Simonette. Thankfully John Vaughn was able to meet the transport and keep Holly overnight, and with Patti's permission, Holly ended up staying until Wednesday in John's care before he takes her to Claremont.

We appreciate John and Patti's help to get Holly on to a new life.

JOHN SAYS:
Holly is doing well. I asked Patti is she would mind if I kept Holly for a couple of days to give her a chance to relax and enjoy some affection. She has been able to play on the deck and in the backyard with the other dogs. I babysit 2 others a lot so there were already five here.

She is getting the routine down to a degree. She is still very shy, but very calm and sweet. I carried her to the couch last night downstairs so she could lay next to me while I was watching TV with the other dogs lounging.

I stroked her head and just continued the process of having her learn that she can be inside a home and receive affection and coexist with the other dogs and relax. Like most, she obviously has not had this luxury, even though I don't know her background.

She slept in a kennel last night behind my computer, but she goes out across the deck to the back/side yard which provides a nice comfortable place for her. She generally does not realize she is welcome to walk into my home, but she is warming to the idea.

UPDATE FROM FOSTER HOME:
First Zuzu came to my house for an overnight visit.

Now it looks like she is coming back today and I will be fostering her until she finds her own forever home.

ZUZU & LEGACYVicki asked me to foster her as she needs another puppy to play with (and Legacy does a great job of that!)

Also, she is learning more about boundaries and how to interact with other dogs by watching the interaction of my other dogs.

Winter housing for homeless cats

Homeless cats have a very difficult time surviving a Minnesota winter. If you would like to create a shelter, check out the excellent model created by the team of Nancy & Tom and Carolyn in Bemidji. And read their story below.

I can attest to the fact that shelters like this, plus food and water, really work. I took in a mom cat and five newborn kittens that had survived several days of severely cold weather in early February last year in a shelter very much like this.

NOTE FROM NANCY:
We tried as hard as we could, but we were unable to live-trap a couple beautiful feral cats, so we made a winter house for them.

Used a great pattern found online where there is a plastic container within a plastic container, and the bedding and insulation is straw. The straw is packed tight so it should be warm for the winter.

The front hole is completed with one of my 7" tupperware plastic canisters so the cats come and go safely. Now will see if it works.

Ideally it would have been great to trap the cats and have them spayed/neutered, but they out-smarted us with every attempt. We will drop food out at their location on occasion, but I am sure they have a good diet with a restaurant nearby.

This is about all we can do for them at the moment......just thought you might like to see the winter housing.

Winter straw has arrived

Our winter straw supply arrived and was tucked away in our straw shed recently.

The straw was so generously provided by Susan of the ABE! Fund of Illinois again this year.

300 bales of fresh dry oat straw is critical to keep the dogs and puppies insulated and warm throughout the winter in the outdoor kennels at the RLRR shelter.

Mike also banked up the cathouse addition with straw to prevent the water pipes from freezing.

Thank you to Susan, Crumpet (Susan's adopted Red Lake dog) and Mike for your help in keeping the shelter warm this winter.

Sonny & Bo

SONNYSonny and Bo were adopted together by a farm family. Sonny was rescued by Lauren and Mike in Ponemah with severe mange and starvation at the May clinic.

BOBo came as a surrender when someone brought him out in the trunk of his car with quills. We had earler taken his brother Shamu.

NEW FAMILY UPDATE #1:
Well, we think Sonny is a very alert sweet loving dog! We just love him!

Last Saturday was a tough day as we could see Sonny just didn't know or care about his name or coming to us -- just wanted to chase, bark and play with the horses. We knew we had to really work on but he was running across the road onto the field and just kept going.

Thankfully Bo came back and later Sonny did too. Randy and I talked right there in front of Sonny about how we really want him to stay but we won't keep a dog tied up. So if Sonny wouldn't yield to learning to stay home and come to us he may have to be returned.

So we agreed on what small steps to start with. About a half-hour later Sonny just went after the horses again. I was near him and knelt down and he came over to me and I just prayed over him asking the Lord to show him that we really want to keep him and need him to listen better. I prayed for great guidance for us in teaching, rewarding, etc.

Well glory be, Sonny has just been improving all this week! The horses aren't much fun to him now and so he leaves them alone for the most part. Our one kitty made it up to the deck this morning and the dogs just gave him a lot of space. Last night all 3 dogs came into the living room to watch some TV with us. They were all quiet and good-natured.

He and Bo have so much fun leaping and playing and sometimes take after a squirrel. I think getting the two dogs at one time was a very good idea. I call Sonny our deck monitor as he is always scanning the goings on around our place. Bo has such a tender heart! He just is so happy about everything.

They come to the barn morning and night to help with my little amount of horse chores and Bo has come along way in the last couple days. At first he was very nervous about the pitch fork I use to throw the hay in but now he just follows me or sits real nearby and watches. We're working on getting him to sit when we say sit and wow he's picking up on that very fast. He is so eager to please and very smart that teaching him thing is a real joy.

With both we are careful to not scare them or make them feel like we can't be trusted. Last night Bo was laying on the floor next to Randy's recliner and was getting petted and he had such a sweet look of contentment on his face, it was good.

They both love our old dog Lucky and Lucky loves them. Lucky has things he's been showing them and they love to follow him around the yard.

We've gone all this week without tying them up and both have been staying home so well. We are enjoying them so much! They both have such great personalities and show us such love and trust even though the some humans have left scars on them. They are willing to entrust their hearts and lives to us, we are grateful.

Bo lays on this bedspread and just loves to nap in the sun on the deck. I'll send more pics when I get more. They are a little worried about the camera and cell phone picture sounds so they should soon be over that noise too.

UPDATE #2
We had such a good weekend with them! They have both learned so much and fit in so well at our house. Randy and I talked this morning about how far they have come in just a little over a week!

Bo was helping me clean in the barn yesterday, so he could show off how well he can leap up onto the bales to the top and down again.

Our one kitty was up there on the top but she didn't care much about Bo and Bo was real sweet with her.

Sonny only seems to run to the horses around chores time and I think in his mind he is being helpful by rounding them up to the barn. I'm okay with that and the horses don't care.

Sonny takes his job as ranch security seriously and we admire that and don't want to discourage this sense of duty. Both of them a have shown us how dear they are to friends that come over and they like to act a little silly for some entertainment for us all. They both love to run after each other with big happy smiles on their faces!

Sorry I get so windy when I update but I can't say enough about how well it is working out and how smart they are. They like popcorn while watching movies too! I was able to sneak a picture of all 3 buddies by our front door this morning but left my camera at home so I'll get that sent soon.

Karen, do come over and see us when ever you can, we'd all love a visit from you! Thank you, too, for your prayers. I believe the Lord has been so good to us by blessing us with Sonny and Bo and our new friendship with you! You and your rescue team are outstanding! God bless you all!

Kathy, Jason and Rachel decided to make a trip up to Red Lake Rosie's on Saturday 11/5. We also met Darcy and Tom, two volunteers from the Metro.

We helped organize the shed.

Darcy and Karen set up some outdoor kennels.

We got our puppy fix. These little ones were rescued from the dump, skinny and had mange. They have come a long way thanks to Karen. They are so cute.

We got our kitten fix. These are the two bottle babies that went to PetHaven. They are so adorable.

We met Marty (we were calling him Simba the Lion).

We met the nicest, sweetest puppy we all fell in love with. Look at those ears!

Stormy was a gentleman and introduced himself.

Bridget wanted to come home with us!

Moxie's family comes to help

MOXIE AT RLRROn November 4th - 6th we had new visitors, Darcy and Tom spend the weekend helping at the shelter. The connection we have with Darcy and Tom is a dog named Moxie which they adopted several years ago.

DARCY AND PUPMoxie is a shep rescued by Polly with a nose that was crooked and was determined to have been shot. She was found on the old Gonvick truck trail road in the middle of nowhere , but now has a great life with Darcy and Tom.

One day in mid-October Karen and Geri got a call at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that 4 puppies were in a refigerator in Ponemah, and so we went off on a road trip to find the puppies and bring them to the shelter. There had apparently been a fire at the residence and the puppies ended up placed in an old refrigerator.

Well when we got there, we found the refrigerator - but could find no puppies. We searched the area, and soon we hear a loud commotion and a few houses down saw a golden fluffy dog laying on his back and 4 large shepherds attacking him.

Geri and I immediately ran over and got the dogs off the fluffy dog and he went running to what we assumed was his porch. So we thought we had done a good deed and saved this dog, we called Marty.

As we backed out the van to leave the area, disappointed that we could find no puppies, we saw the 4 dogs circling around the house and saw Marty shaking in fear on the porch. We inspected Marty to find a large laceration on his abdomen and realized his life was at stake. No one was home, and so we made a decision to rescue Marty from his attackers and left a message on the door of his owner that we had him and would get him medical attention and return him home.

Marty went to the shelter, and on to the Akin/Ark clinic a day later, and had his abdomen stitched, got him neutered, vaccinated, groomed and bathed. The owner asked us to keep Marty for a while until he was healed and then return him. We returned Marty to his home on November 8th, and left food and straw in his doghouse.

Bottle babies

We got a call at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that a mama cat was killed by dog and there were 3 little 2-week-old kittens left orphaned.

The owner allegedly put them in a box in the woods where some kids found them and took them home. They began feeding them nonfat dry milk which would not nourish them. One died.

A very nice lady from Ponemah brought the two survivors to the RLRR shelter and we began bottling them with kitten milk.

The two little 8-ounce kittens have been here for 8 days now and are sucking the bottling and thriving. They are active, playful and very sweet.

We are happy to report the two orphans left Sunday, November 6th with Tom and Darcy enroute to the great foster care of Deb for Pet Haven.

Preparations for winter at RLRR

With winter approaching there is lots of activity at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

Linda Hultquist visited on October 23-26 and winterized 18 kennels with a plastic sheeting. Linda singlehandedly worked on the kennels and did a remarkable job. The plasic is better than tarping because they make use of the solar heating as well as allow the dogs to see outside. We will still use some tarping, but this new plastic technique, which was Linda's idea, seems to work very well.

While Linda visited, she took special care of Delores, a very small stray puppy that came in at the clinic. This little puppy had mange and was malnourished and moved into the cathouse bedroom with Linda.

Delores was bathed and pampered all the while Linda was at the shelter.

Of course Linda made every effort to get Delores a foster home, and the good news is that when Linda left Wednesday she had little Delores riding shotgun enroute to Dr. Vickie at Act V!!

Landscape improvements for RLRR

We have made lots of improvements this fall at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

Firstly, we put 2 new roofs on our 2 heavy duty kennels. We have tarped in the kennels and now will be able to safely use these kennels as we can shovel off the snow during the winter months, and keep the rain out is the summer.

Also we remodeled the first 4 2/pod kennels we got in 2007 and 2008 with new heavy duty panels to hold larger dogs. The panels are heavy duty welded steel. We removed the old panels which were patched and not in good condition. This added 8 nice spaces for dogs or puppies.

We added 2 gates at the entrances of the shelter as well as some fencing.

Also since the shelter area is lowlaying we have a problem with water and were able to get 4 loads of #5 gravel, sewer rock, and split rock to improve the shelter grounds.

Funding for these projects was provided by Joan Lawson, Disney Foundation grant written by Howard Goldman of HSUS, and USDA Grant.

We are so happy to have these improvements before winter.

Sight for Sully

Little Sully had his appointment with the animal eye specialist. This amazing gentle boy, who managed to survive four rough years before Karen rescued him was diagnosed as being totally blind. Why this is surprising is because Sully gets around so remarkably well that most people that have met Sully thought he probably had some vision.

When he first walked into my house he tapped his head on every wall, table, couch and chair,but only once. He went out the back door,rolled down the deck steps, but only once. Then he walked the perimeter of the fenced yard,came up the steps, and re-entered the house as though he had lived here all of his life.

Sully scampers from room to room with the other dogs,loves bounding up and down the hills in the woods and even follows the other dogs into the lake for water. Sully loves to cuddle and is about the sweetest, most grateful little guy you could ever find.

He would love to play and tries to, but because of his visual limitations the other dogs often misread his signals; for example, he will walk right into or under another dog's stomach.

I tend to be over-protective and find that I often underestimate his intelligence and resourcefulness, qualities that no doubt have kept him alive.

Now, for the good news---although Sully's left eye (the one that appears clearer) is beyond hope, the damage to his right eye can be reversed!

During the consultation the eye specialist stated that he doesn't see any reason that the sight couldn't be restored in the right eye.

Now, for the NOT so good news, the cost will be about $1600. If we could start a "Sight for Sully" fund and raise some of the money this deserving little guy might get the best Christmas present ever.

Ode had a great summer!

We're always glad to have an update on Ode who came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as a small pup with his ears burned off (see original post or search blog to see all the Ode posts). He recovered quickly and found a forever home with his foster mom who sent this update:

I've attached 3 pix of Ode: 1) frolicking on the shore of Lake Superior over Labor Day weekend, 2) inside an airy sculpture at the very cool Franconia sculpture park (near Lindstrom/Shafer), and 3) awaiting treats with one of her beaus, Phoenix. [full disclosure: I adopted the very self-possessed Phoenix 6 mos after my dear Roki died in the summer of '05.

BTW, if you know of anyone who has trouble with a puller (like Ode!), pls feel free to share this link: http://www.dog-harness-solutions.com. It's an Australian company run by two women who are SUPER customer-service-oriented, and their slip harness feels like the magic solution I've been seeking for nearly 3 years! Ode got THREE walks yesterday (2 more than usual lately), and we're headed out soon. The way the thing wraps around the dog's chest/front legs takes a bit of practice, but it's that configuration that provides dogs like Ode the sense of balance and stabilization they might not feel naturally when going out into the noisy, smell-filled, distracting outdoors! It's so gratifying to take RELAXING (for both of us) walks for a change. I'm soooo grateful!

I'm sorry I didn't make it up there over the summer, as planned, but I think of you often and hope that someday I'll make it up there.

October Clinic

The dust is settling and the final clinic of 2011 is complete.

Akin Hills and Animal Ark came on Friday, October 21, 2011 and cleaned the warehouse in preparation for a great 2 day clinic. Lindsay Kline and friends did a great job raising all the funds needed for the clinic which is admirable.

A total of 97 dogs and cats were neutered or spayed which was so important at this time of the year to prevent January litters which normally will suffer and freeze to death in this harsh climate.

SARGE WITH FACE FULL OF QUILLS A total of 42 animals were surrendered (sadly, three of the puppies died of parvo); 27 were transferred out to Animal Allies, SHH foster care, RLRR foster care, Dr. Bartsch, Animal Ark, and Tricounty.

Only 12 animals were sent to the RLRR shelter, and one of those, Delores, a small pup leaves tomorrow for Act V Rescue & Rehabilitation.

A big thank you to Linda Ratay for providing great food, and to Billy for working in the kitchen all during the clinic providing meals for the volunteers.

DONATED FOOD
Another big thank you to Last Hope volunteers who helped during the clinic, as well as made an impromptu transport of 16 surrendered animals on Saturday all the way to Duluth to Animal Allies to help out.

First of all, NEVER get a puppy or kitten from someone selling them in a parking lot. NO reputable breeder would find homes for their animals that way. These animals come from puppy mills or bad backyard breeders. ALWAYS see where your new pet has been living.

Karen sent me news that she and Nancy O have been monitoring this activity in Bemidji. These "give away" and "puppies for sale" are intact and contributing to the over-population of companion animals at Red Lake.

Colleen has been working on a campaign to end selling and giving away animals in the parking lots of the Target and WalMart stores in Bemidji. She made a couple of phone calls and wrote letters. Already there are results, Target has put on their property where pups were being sold, not one, but THREE signs that say "no sales or soliciting".

Isn't that great!!! If you ever see this practice, contact the business to protest. Make a difference.

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue coordinated the final 2011 MN SNAP spay/neuter clinic at the end of September at the Redby warehouse. Approximately 90 animals were altered.

LAUREN & PUPAs usual, Dr. Culbertson and her team worked long days to help prevent the birth of unwanted litters of cats and dogs, along with providing free health care to injured/ill animals. There are always quills to remove, wounds to treat, and hip and leg injuries caused by auto collisions to assess in between all of the s/n surgeries.

LINDSAYLindsay, from Dr. Culbertson's team, worked heroically to vaccinate, worm, and apply flea & tick preventative to all of the animals, which was many more than 90, since quite a few previously altered cats and dogs come in for these services.

BEFOREVivian and Skye, two young local volunteers, joined us again to help. Tragically, Vivian's dog, Sparky, was killed by a car as she and Skye were walking to the warehouse on the last day of the clinic. Our gratitude and best wishes go out to these girls, especially to Vivian for her loss.

AFTERAlso, thanks to Wallace who has been a great help at many clinics over the years.

ELLENThank you to all of the hard-working clinic volunteers: Lauren, Nancy, Jill, Ellen, Julie, and Norma. Julie's mom, Norma, who was supposed to be vacationing, was conscripted into helping Julie groom some less than cooperative dogs and worked a long day as her assistant. Thanks to all of you. We appreciate each of you and all the great food prepared and send by Claudia!

We gave out the excess canned goods on the kitchen shelves to the family of Teri Stately and her daughter who volunteered. We gave the vegetarian Black beans and the leftover vegetarian food to Dr. Kim Culbertson who was so happy to receive it.

We think the team did about 95 animals. The final tally will be in later.

We have LOTS of animals at the shelter and most are adoption ready so we hope to move them out soon.

We are happy to announce that Red Lake Rosie's Rescue has been awarded a renewal of the DJ & T Foundation Grant for $10,000 to neuter and spay Red Lake community-owned dogs as well as a grant from Spay/Neuter Initiative of Pet Haven for $2,000 to neuter and spay community and shelter cats.

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue's main focus is reducing the overpopulation of companion animals on the Red Lake Reservation. Each year our major expense is spay/neuter surgeries and vet care. These grants sure help us reach our goal.

Another grant which provided funding for 3 Mn Snap clinics this year is Chuck & Don's Pet Food Outlet. Additionally, Joan Lawson funded a high volume Animal Ark/ Akin Hills clinic in March 2011 and Akin Hills is raising funds to sponsor another clinic October 22 and 23, 2011.

Thank you to all our supporters who help with grants and high volume clinic support. Also, Thank you to the many dedicated volunteers who come and work at the clinic, send food, or support the clinics in other ways. We can always use more helpers -- truly, many hands make light work.

We are already scheduling clinics for 2012 with MN SNAP: April 12-14; June 21-23; August 20-22; October dates TBA

Just one night...

Wanted to send you this from John V. who was nice enough to take these kids home from the transport and get them on to Tricounty Humane Society in St. Cloud the following day.

THUNDERWe are so thankful we have so many friends in the metro willing to transport, bring food, overnight our pups and cats, raise funds, and maintain the blog. Without all these people, the animals of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue would not get the help they are now getting.

Here's John's experience:

I picked up the 3 large pups at Barb O's home in Minneapolis Saturday afternoon. Barb had just arrived and kennels were everywhere. She led Thunder to my vehicle and we loaded Addie and Maddie who were both in a kennel in the backseat, and I headed home. I opened the side gate which opens to my side/back yard and drove right in, closing the gate behind me.

The weather was perfect, so I let all the pups out -- unsure at first, they slowly started playing and enjoying the freedom of my yard. I introduced them to my 3 dogs (2 hound mixes and a chihuahua) and a great pyrennes/golden, plus a shi-zhu/poodle I was babysitting and this was quite a scene.

ADDIE & MADDIEEveryone got along fine and the backyard was a beehive of activity. I set up their kennels on the deck, then began to prepare their dinner. Thunder inhaled his dinner, Addie ate quickly and Maddie took her time. Everyone was enjoying the mild weather and there were lots of things to explore, so this was a very enjoyable time for the pups and a good time for me to give them a lot of affection and attention.

Hours later, when it was time for bed, I wrapped a tarp under, then over their kennels and over a deck table with one side open for ventilation, put a little ceramic heater under the table to keep some warmth going, and brought out a radio to so the pups could hear something to keep them company. I checked on them periodically to make sure the temperature was comfortable. Very mild temperatures were on our side with no rain, which helped to make this quite simple.

I wanted to bring them all inside, but with 5 other dogs, it would be clumsy. (had it been hot or cold, they would have been in the house, but the weather was quite
beautiful) I got up in the middle of the night and let them all out to run and do their business as I wanted them to be comfortable in their kennels. I also fed them all again.....Thunder again inhaling his food, Addie ate slowly and Maddie just looked at her food.

In the morning play time started again, and the back yard and access to the deck and the water bowl, and 5 other dogs made for a great playland for the pups. I was able to spend time with them, taking pictures and giving them as much affection as possible. Thunder seemed to want to be held as he demonstrated a great need for affection and touch, and the two lab mixes were just having fun.

I enjoyed sitting on the steps of the deck just taking it all in, petting and playing with them and trying to give them hands-on affection which Thunder especially seemed to need and soak up. They were all so nice and clean, so someone had given them a bath and I will admit, that was nice as I was expecting to give 3 baths at my house.

That afternoon after our pleasant time together, I sadly had to load them up and we drove to St. Cloud. Sweet Thunder sat in the front right seat and I was able to give him affection all the way to Tri-county. I gave that boy a lot of kisses and hugs as he was so sweet and seemed to want to be held and petted constantly. I gave them all a leashed walk before taking them into Tri-County.

I started to feel a familiar sadness as they were being admitted to the shelter. I gave them all kisses and did what I do with all the fosters I take care of.....no matter how briefly- and I am sure that other foster parents deal with this goodbye in simliar fashion. I kissed them one last time, told them that I loved them and hoped that they have a good life.

I got to see them all after they were given a kennel as I quickly toured the facility and I went through my goodbyes again and that produced some more tears as I am an emotional slob. Thunder recognized me and my voice and seemed a bit confused as to why he was behind the kennel door, so I reached through as best I could and petted his head and talked to him. These brief encounters really do get to my heart and little Thunder had responded so sweetly as he was the neediest of the 3. My hope is that all of them find their way into a very loving, attentive home.

For 24 hours, I thoroughly enjoyed those 3 little angels, and I found I wanted to keep them longer so I could hug and kiss them as much as possible, and enjoy watching them play in the backyard, enjoying freedom, the falling leaves, a bowl of water to drink, good food and a very happy place with lots of company and affection. This was a brief but wonderful experience for me.

Chewy needs a second chance

Chewy is a Shih Tzu that was surrendered to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue about 3 weeks ago. He came with 2 of the puppies from a litter that were also not wanted. Thankfully the pups went into foster care, but Chewy stayed at the shelter.

At first he was scared and growly, and it was difficult to get the leash over his head as he was on guard to bite at any time. I was not sure what the future held for Chewy in his state. He sat with his head hung low, very unhappy and depressed. His hair, mostly gone on his rear quarters make him even more unappealing!

According to the girl who surrendered Chewy, he was born in 2009--that made him only 2 years old- yet he looked like he was a "old" dog. He was neutered at our clinic in May 2011.

Then a miracle happened -- after about one week the true Chewy came out. Now he dances and prances, and has no more fear. He is a wonderful dog and I am so happy to see the transformation.

He was treated with Revolution and is getting good food. He lives in an outdoor kennel and we are hoping that after the October Clinic someone will take Chewy and he will get a second chance for a forever home.

He will be groomed and bathed at our next clinic courtesy of Julie.
Does anyone think there is a place for Chewy?

Elsa is happy now

Elsa was a mangy and very hungry pom that came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as a surrender at the August clinic. There is not too much demand for a mangy pom, but ARVSS took little Elsa and gave her a chance. Now she has a wonderful home!

and she's fast! My cat is not thrilled, but it's improving day by day. So I guess so far so good!

Leroy's life

WINDBLOWNLeroy came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue from a life on a chain with a huge tumor growing on his rear flank. He had his initial surgery up north. The tumor weighed eight pounds (!), but was benign and has not regrown. See the first blog post about him.

OUTDOORSYHe moved down to the Cities where Act V made some improvements to his surgical site and his health was renewed. He has been adopted by a fellow who is a perfect match and Leroy can't stop smiling.

JOYFULUPDATE FROM ADOPTER:
I just wanted to give you an update on Leroy. It just gets better. This is the happiest dog I have ever seen.

SUNNYWe moved out to the country where he has a corn field in the back yard and a lake in the front. Lots of windows to scope out squirels and rabbits during the day. He doesn't need to be chained anymore.

PLAYFULHe runs around a big lot and occasionally into the corn field after an irresistable rabbit. I got a collar that beeps so I can find him when this happens. We still go for walks every morning no matter what the weather, but he is good to go for the rest of the day, so it's worth it.

SILLYThe night time walks have so far been replaced with boat rides. I mention "wanna go for a boat ride" and he's doing back flips, runs like a lightning bolt down to the boat and does a 5' leap into the boat. It's like the dog can fly.

HANDSOMEHe has a lot of dog friends in the neighborhood and has become very socialized. Everyone in the neighborhood loves him. Thank you for rescuing this incredible dog.

SEXYWhen introduced to his new vet, they looked at him and said, "get ready for a good life"!!

A nice lady named Nicole from Elk River was in Red Lake recently and found 2 little puppies wandering the roads. She called Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and I told her how full we were - so - she took the two little puppies with her to Elk River.

She stopped at RLRR shelter and the little pups got wormer, lst parvo shots, and flea and tick application. Here is Nicole's update:

RINGO & RIOHi Karen,
Just wanted to let you know how great the puppies are doing! Tomorrow, Ringo goes to his new home, and I am keeping Rio. They are both thriving, and they are truly the most remarkable puppies I have ever seen.

I take pictures nonstop, and I'm partnering with the local Chuck and Don's to bring more awareness for your rescue, so they are allowing me to post the photos I took up there and of the rescue pups I have and post them on the board so people can see for themselves what great things you are doing! I have some pictures attached for you... Ringo is the blue eyed guy, and Rio is the darker one.

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, I'm going to miss Ringo but he is going to such a great home, and will be the apple of the 10-year-old boy's eye. I am so happy to have gotten the chance to save these little guys, and it's truly an amazing thing what you do day in and day out. Thank you again, and I am working on getting some extra dog food for you guys up there, and anything I can do to help down here, get the word out, let me know.

Oh, and I am still hopeful that the pups mother will be able to be rescued and brought to your caring, loving place. When you get her, please let me know! It will put my mind at ease. God Bless you, Karen!

A Diamond in the rough: Sully

Meet Diamond-- now Sully. He is a little poodle mix who came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and soon we noticed he was blind. He was so frightened and would cower whenever we came near him.

We thought Diamond was an old fellow, however, the vet aged him at 4 years old. We had Diamond's teeth cleaned and had him neutered.

We soon discovered Diamond was a great dog, walking well on a leash, and doing little dances for us.

We took Diamond to the clinic and Julie gave him a great haircut and bath. Thankfully he then went to Crystal's foster care and she dearly loves this boy.

Here's a pic of Diamond on arrival. A very sad little boy. No comparison to his demeanor now!!

CRYSTAL SAYS:
I couldn't think of a name for our little guy that felt right. I told my son he is so persevering and brave and he said "How about "Sully" for the persevering Ann Sullivan (Helen Keller's teacher) and the heroic airplane pilot named Sully.

He sleeps on the bed, walks on a leash, is totally housebroken, finds his way down the deck steps to go out to the fenced-in yard. He stands on his back legs and dances in a circle when he gets excited.

Affectionate, smart, sweet, brave and happy little guy -- whoever ends up adopting this little guy is truly going to be blessed.

Cheyenne Alicia loves her new home

ADOPTER UPDATE:
Just a quick note...we're all finally settled in after our long distance move from chilly, gray Minnesota to the warmer, deep, south and wanted to give an update on Cheyenne Alicia.

Cheyenne is doing well, even adjusting to the warmer weather. We bought her a kiddie wading pool, which she knew what to do with right away. We have 18 acres here with a fenced yard just around the house: She and Damon have loads of fun running around chasing, racing and wrestling with one another. She loves to keep an watchful eye on the cats when they're outside too. We also take them for walks around our property and Sunday rides with daddy on D,C and D day. She enjoys sticking her head out the window during the car ride.

She's doing well. She's fully bonded with all of us, especially to her canine brother, Damon and the cats. She has her special place at the foot of the bed with us and Damon. She still plays mommy to the cats. She's learned not to be too aggressive with Princess anymore, which makes Princess very happy and allows Cheyenne to spend time alongside her more often.

She and Damon are even closer and she is more comfortable with him after they spent time together alone when they were boarded two times just before we moved. Now when he drops down alongside her to cuddle up or just rest, she no longer runs away. She just learned how to walk on our wood floors off the carpet runners and is enjoying sniffing everything she couldn't get to before: everything is new.

Thanks again for all you do and for rescuing Cheyenne. She is a happy girl now and we intend to keep her that way.

The Great Minnesota Pet Together: SATURDAY!

MnPAW (Minnesota Partnership for Animal Welfare) will host Minnesota’s second annual super adoption event, The Great Minnesota Pet Together, presented by PetSmart Charities on Saturday, October 1st.

Hundreds of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be available for adoption at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adoptable pets from more than 25 animal welfare and rescue organizations (INCLUDING RED LAKE ROSIE'S RESCUE!) will be onsite on this special date and ready for their forever home.

Date & Time: Saturday, October 1st 10:00am – 4:00pm Rain or Shine

Location: Minnesota State Fairgrounds, International Bazaar

There is no charge for admission to the event or for parking.

Saving Orson

A little old shaggy dog named Orson ended up unclaimed and out of time at the Bemidji impound. Nancy O, friend of Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and all animals, volunteers there and watches out for the abandoned pets that should have a second chance. She and others tried to find a rescue to save him despite his age and deplorable condition, but it was Act V Rescue & Rehabilitation in Bloomington that came through again.I've had so many emails about this little guy; I'm sure Orson's fan club will be glad to see his post! Marilou of PetHaven and MnPaw was present when Orson arrived at Act V and was moved to write about the organization and Orson on her blog. You can read the full post here.

HIGHLIGHTS OF MARILOU'S COMMENTS:
Today, I had the opportunity to experience first hand again how incredible Act V Rescue is and how dedicated and committed they are to truly helping the most unwanted and neglected animals. An older dog, Orson, was scheduled to arrive on transport today from up north. In our efforts to help the dogs up at Leech Lake Reservation we have also been helping dogs from the Bemidji impound. Volunteer extraordinaire Nancy O has been, and continues to be, an advocate for the dogs that land in the Bemidji impound and pulls them out before they are euthanized....

Nancy sent a note to MNPAW about Orson, "Hope you received the photo of Orson that Tom sent from his phone. Orson is a cutie, an older dog, and he needs a lot of work. He is loaded with mats and needs a good grooming and bath. But it looks like he needs a lot of dental care as well and am hoping that this is something MnPAW/AHS offers. He really does have a nice sweet personality, but is plenty stinky and a lot of that is coming from his mouth. Poor guy ... I am betting he cannot eat hard morsels of food and am betting that is all that was served in the impound. Perhaps he will need some tooth extractions and then soft foods the remainder of his days. For all the goodness his former family did not offer him, I hope he find it at AHS and can get the medical attention he needs. Even the officer at the impound is pulling for Orson. I held him when we picked him up as he was shaking so much, and now he is riding with Nancy B on her front seat...."

After Nancy's note I forwarded it to the founders of Act V Rescue. At the end of the day Dr. Vicki sends me an email and tells me to have Jenny swing by her clinic so she can take a look at Orson so she can check him out. I meet Jenny and Orson at Dr. Vicki's clinic. The horrible condition of this sweet boy is beyond words. He was shaking and shivering. His teeth were all rotted and packed with tartar. Most of them will probably have to be extracted. His body was filled with mats and as Dr. Vicki started to shave him we discovered his poor, weak body was infested with maggots. As he was shaved down we saw a swarm of maggots nesting in Orson's body. Maggots were wiggling out of his fur and dropping onto the table. There was an odor and stench from maggots and other critters that had found a home in his poor body that was beyond anything I had ever experienced. All the while Orson is being so patient and gentle and quietly crying. As Dr. Vicki and her staff work to make Orson better and to remove the mats and the maggots, I am rubbing his head and trying to comfort him. Jenny is holding the trash bag to collect the squirming maggots.

It was Orson's lucky day today! He ended up at Dr. Vicki's clinic and into the arms of Act V Rescue ... over and over I have heard stories and witnessed how they take in the most beaten down animal, both physically and emotionally. They did it when they took in the 3 puppies i'm fostering (Legacy, Lenny and Lazarus) .... they did it again today with Orson. There wasn't even a question in Dr. Vicki's mind of whether or not she was going to help Orson ... this was one of the worse cases she has seen and in the true spirit of Act V Rescue & Rehabilitation, they took this poor boy into their foster program. Dr. Vicki doesn't have a foster lined up for the sweet boy right now so after his bath he got to ride in style next to Dr. Vicki and will spend some time at her home till a foster home opens up.

Thank you Act V Rescue for your selfless acts and for all you truly do for the most unwanted and neglected animals. Because Act V works with animals in the most desperate situations, they are always in need of money to provide medication, surgery, medical care and/or rehabilitation. FIRST UPDATE FROM DR. VICKI OF ACT V:
Orson had a very good night. After he and I shared a martini and watched TV (he slept thru most of CSI), he went poop and potty outside. He slept all night, no crying or barking. When I went to wake him up this morning I discovered he doesn't hear well. But, he was up and out again and enjoying his canned food and taking his meds for his mouth. He won't have a tooth left after Monday, but they are loose and rotten anyway. He's heartworm negative but is positive for anaplasma and lymes. Under all those matts is a chubby little boy! He actually needs a diet! I'll keep you informed on his progress.

LOVE this little goober! How does a dog get so neglected and yet be sooooooooo sweet?!

Orson has had his pill with his dinner, got some medicine in his ear and now he is scouting out the joint. He can go up stairs to the bedroom so I will put a bed in the bathroom up there so he can be by us. It appears he wants to get on the bed so I will keep him close by.

Thank you for letting me care for him. He must have been with the circus cuz every time I turn around he is sitting up on his haunches. CUTE!

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue had an overnight visitor, Nancy B. She arrived Tuesday and took care of all the cats and then left the next morning, September 14th, with a transport of 12 dogs and puppies going to various rescues. She also transported Orson, a little dog from the Bemidji Pound.

NANCY & VASHTINancy brought gifts from herself and other RLRR friends. One of the great treats for the cats was a tall beautiful cat tree donated to Chuck & Don's for us. Jane Norling picked it up with donated food. The cats were very happy to have the gift and many enjoyed climbing and enjoying the sights from the top of the tower!

NEW CAT TREE!Nancy has a special gift with the cats and kittens. The cathouse was bustling with activity and fun. Not only did she catch us up on laundry, she had lots of time to show love to the kitties too.

TRANSPORTEarly the next morning Nancy was busy with cats again and then helped load up the transport with outgoing dogs and puppies.

KIDS IN THE WOODSHeaded for Animal Ark was a group of 5 puppies from the woods that I found the day Nancy arrived. Animal Ark had taken another 5 of the litter last Saturday. The mama dog had 11 puppies, and started moving them out to a den in the woods. I was able to get five on my first visit and when I returned there were only 5 left, so we are not sure what happened to the 11th pup. Anyway, the ten are safely reunited with their littermates in the care of Linda who fosters for the Ark. The mama dog was fixed at the clinic last weekend!

DANCERAlso on transport was Dancer, a small breed dog that was surrendered with another blind Poodle we call Diamond. Dancer was accepted by All Dog Rescue and will be in foster care. He came in very frightened and cowering, but improved so much over the past 2 weeks.

TUTUAll Dog also took Tulip aka TuTu. Tutu is a little shep mix that came in a month ago with her brother Tutter. They were badly starved and had many parasites. It took a long time to get them to put on nice body weight and get over diarrhea.

TUTTER & TUTUTutter is still looking for his special placement. Both are wonderful dogs now that they are no longer starving.

We sent 2 juveniles and a litter of 3 puppies to our friends at Tricounty.

ABE! Fund benefit featuring Crumpet

In June, Susan held the second annual ABE! Fund benefit in Lake Forest, Illinois. Susan created the ABE! Fund to benefit Red Lake Rosie's Rescue after her beloved dog "ABE!" died in 2009. You can read ABE's story on the RLRR website http://www.redlakerosie.org/info/display?PageID=7436

ABE!On a beautiful evening in June, 47 people gathered at Susan's house for dinner. This year, the party was hosted by "Crumpet," a two-year-old Cocker Spaniel she adopted from Rosie's in December 2010.

CRUMPETAt the party, Crumpet went from guest to guest soliciting affection by flipping onto his back for a belly rub. Perhaps it was this very clever and sincere charm offensive that produced such amazing generosity, since was $2700 was raised.

Thank you to Susan, who has been a tireless RLRR supporter through her dedicated fund for ABE! -- organizing this annual event at her home, asking all of her many friends and family to donate to the ABE! Fund for this and other events and celebrations, and providing all of the winter straw for the shelter for 2010 and 2011.

Remember the white cat from Ponemah who delivered her all-white litter just in time for her arrival at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue??

They are being fostered through Act V and look like they are doing great!

September 7 transport

BLUE BOY'S BLUE EYESOn September 7, volunteers for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue met in Bemidji at Pete's Place South: Barbie, Kristin, Delores, Tom, Nancy, Carol, Arlie, and Karen.

NANCY & ORSONKAREN, KRISTEN, CAROLKristin and Barbie each had a van full of kibble for the shelter.

Eleven animals from RLRR and two animals from the Bemidji Pound were transported to the metro to various rescues including All Dog, AHS, Pet Haven, Animal Ark and MUSHR.

PATRICEPatrice went to All Dog.

BRANDI THENBrandi, a large malemute/husky mix was brought to the Ponemah Shuttle August 22nd. She was very starved and had been left at Battle River garbage dump a long time ago, as we had caught a glimpse of her there during several clinics and she somehow had managed to survive.

BRANDI NOWBrandi was illusive and we were never able to catch her- but a local resident of Ponemah caught her and brought her to us. She was spayed and vaccinated and thankfully was heartworm negative. After only 3 weeks she had gained lots of body weight and proved to be a great dog.

BLUE BOYMIAShe left for MUSHR along with Blue Boy and Mia on September 7.

FIVE PUPSAnimal Ark took in a litter of 5 pups which came from a large litter of 11. We made a home visit and the people wanted to surrender a large litter of very small pups. The mother dog was not producing enough milk and was moving the puppies and hiding them in the woods. We got these five before she took them into the woods. We are going to look for the remaining six and Ark has agreed to take them, too. Thankfully the owners have agreed to let us pick up the mama and have her spayed at the next clinic! Linda is the foster mom who has fostered so many Red Lake puppies and is expert at it. I expect we'll get some photos!!

Simone S'kitten at home as Cricket

After nearly a year in foster care, Cricket (formerly Simone) was adopted by her foster mom. Cricket was part of the S'kittens family who was turned in to Karen at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue last summer as an unwanted litter. The five kittens - Sterling, Sassy, Scarlett, Sabrina and Simone -- were about five weeks old, skinny and wormy.

The other four recovered from their malnourished state after a couple of months, but little Cricket had digestive problems for nine months. At one point, she was doing so poorly that her foster mom had sadly concluded that perhaps the best thing would be to put the struggling kitten to sleep. Luckily, the RLRR foster cat coordinator, and her foster mom decided to try one more thing: they gave Cricket some more fluids and within a day or so she was out of the woods.

She still wasn't able to shake her chronic diarrhea, though. A wide variety of medications was administered in an attempt to correct the problem. The poor little thing was given wormers, antibiotics, metronidazole, herbs and probiotics over several months. It would get better, then worse. Two steps forward, one step back. Finally in April, Cricket got better.

Her foster mom thought she should give the kitten some time to make sure she was really fine before putting her up for adoption. (The other four s'kittens had already found wonderful forever homes.) In those few weeks, Cricket made it clear that she was already home.

Hadn't she proved it by never getting mad at her foster mom even after getting a syringe of icky-tasting stuff shoved down her throat, followed by a dry pill? And by snuggling on mom's pillow and following her around the house - even more than the resident German shepherd? Surely it was clear that she didn't need to find another home: she was already there!

Today Cricket has a job: supervising some foster kittens that her mom pulled from an impound in rural Minnesota. She plays with her older cat sisters with good humor, easily moving on to another playmate when an older cat gets tired of rough kitten play.

Cricket is grateful to Karen Good and RLRR for sticking with her through her health problems and letting her stay in her great home!
