How Stella got her Groove back

A little husky shep came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue in late summer with mange and the condition of rickets which is from prenatal and postnatal malnutrition. We named this sweet girl Stella.

Stella was a wonderful puppy that ran around the shelter in spite of her bowed legs, which caused her to trip and fall occasionally. This did not stop this spirited little girl from enjoying life.

Kathryn fell in love with this little girl when she was working at the shelter and put in a good word for her at All Dog Rescue. Soon she was accepted in their program and today is a beautiful young husky.

Her legs are straight now and she will be adopted- We hope for an update on her soon.

Thank you to All Dog for taking our needy pups and dogs into your care with great results. Just ask Stella!

UPDATE FROM FOSTER MOM:
Hi, Karen;

Stella was adopted right before Christmas - I'm attaching a picture of her sleeping on her toys while she was here with us, as well as a picture of her with her new mom and dad on the day they adopted her!

Raven cries for help

One cold Friday night, Raven, a little black lab shepherd mix, came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as a surrender. This little boy had been run over by a car and was so sad -- he appeared to have a tear in his eye when he arrived.

Immediately, we started sending out his picture and story asking for help.

Jeanne of Carver Scott responded and took Raven into their care. Unfortunately, the leg was damaged to the point that it had to be amputated :-(

Raven is happy now and through his surgery with hopes for a new home and a safe environment in the future.

We get weekly and sometimes daily calls on injured and sick animals here at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue. We are thankful for our partners and supporters who help us with this expensive treatment and care giving hope to many like Raven.

We also want to thank our faithful partners Carver Scott Humane Society and Jean for investing in Raven’s future.

UPDATE FROM FOSTER:
Hi Karen,
The surgeon wasn't able to surgically correct Raven's leg, and recommended amputation. So, Raven is a member of the Tripod club and doing just fine. He's such a happy puppy. Thank you for trusting him to our care.

A knight on a white horse, fair maidens and a tale of kindness

A critical need for Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue shelter is feeding all those mouths! As animals come into the shelter, many of them are malnourished and in great need of high quality kibble and canned food. Enter our ‘fair maidens’ and ‘knight’ in the Twin Cities. Thanks to Pause for Paws President Amy Arellano, RLRR was gifted a huge load of food (at least 1,500 pounds by our best estimate).

A very special thanks goes out to Amy D, RLRR Spay/Neuter Clinic Coordinator for giving up part of her garage to store the food until we could arrange transport to the shelter. She lost use of 1+ garage stalls in her garage.

Before we could get this much needed load of food to the shelter, we learned that several businesses in the south metro were running a supply drive on behalf of our rescue. Dog Day Getaway, Camp Bow Wow, and Turning Leaf Chiropractic all made a huge commitment to companion animals from the Red Lake Reservation. The patrons and staff from these businesses opened their hearts wide and donated at least another 3,000# of food plus many other supplies (toys, treats, coats, beds, blankets, medications, crates, etc). OK, now how were we to get these donations from the south metro to the north metro? Barbie O. stepped up and answered our plea for help on Facebook. Barbie, removed all the rear seats from her minivan and made 2 trips from Apple Valley on Friday, December 16th. For those of you who need reminding, the weather was horrible that afternoon. It snowed 9” that day and Barbie persevered through the snow and traffic to get the donations to Amy’s. Our knight in shining armor had also answered our plea for transport assistance. Kevin S. said he would be more than willing to transport food and supplies up to Motley, where he would hand them off to Nancy and Tom S – our regular stalwart transport volunteers.

Now Amy’s garage was really full.

Unfortunately, the transport had to be postponed due to the snowstorm. It just wasn’t safe to ask Kevin, Nancy and Tom to be driving 350+ miles on rural roads. Weather cleared and we set a new transport date with Kevin. Kevin drove his white F350 truck (yup our white horse) to Amy’s home to load the donations. We packed and stacked, we pushed and shoved. The bed of the truck was surpassed by at least 2’ if not more! To secure the food, we covered the bags with blankets and tied everything down with multiple ratchet straps. Kevin, and his sidekick Larry (a form Red Lake Rez dog) headed north.

Karen was thrilled to get the first load…you read that right, we couldn’t get all the donations in one load.

Kevin, not to be deterred committed to making yet another run to Motley to get the remaining donations up to Karen for the animals.

This time the load was not quite as large. Seriously, I think the first load was almost even with the top of the truck cab – bummed we forgot to get a picture, but loading all that food was exhausting. Plus, we stuffed a ton of stuff in the cab as well, leaving only space for Larry (Kevin’s constant companion and from Red Lake) and Kevin. Along with the remaining donations, we added about another 500 pounds of food DeeDee W had stored in her garage. As you can see, Larry got to go along again on this trip. The boys even brought along Kevin’s wife! Kevin made his second trip on New Year’s Day.

What I love about this tale is the underlying current of kindness and generosity. The animals on the Red Lake Reservation have one less problem. They now have food to fill their bellies. None of this would be possible without the kindness of our “knight,” ”fair maidens,” and generous donors. Literally hundreds of individuals each combined their gifts and time to make this happen.

What a wonderful start to a new year!

Saint Nicholas

Just a day before Christmas a very special gift came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue from a kind lady named Connie from a community not far from Red Lake.

Nicholas was found freezing on a chunk of ice nearly dead as it was -20 below outside that morning. He was rescued and it was discovered that he could not even walk as his claws were ingrown into his foot pads. Poor boy was also very old.

His matted fur was shaved and after a few days he was sent to Red Lake Rosie's for convalescence. It was discovered that St. Nicholas was feline leukemia positive which was confirmed by a saliva and a blood test. Nicholas has his good days and bad days. He sometimes has a ravenous appetite and sometimes no appetite at all.

RLRR is trying to make him as comfortable as possible though the outcome is not certain for Nicholas. He will have further blood testing in the upcoming weeks.

Thank you Connie and all involved in his rescue and for entrusting his care to RLRR.

Chuckie recovers from rickets

Chuckie was surrendered to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue because his legs were crooked.  Often puppies are surrendered with a condition called "rickets" which often results from prenatal and postnatal malnutrition.  The bones do not develop properly due to mineral deficiencies.  We use nutritional treatment and give time for the legs to straighten and we have never had a case that could not be corrected with our patience and good quality grain free canned and kibble.

Chuckie came in with the condition and was taken by Jean of Carver-Scott Humane Society.  As the photos verify he became a healthy pup and now has a bright future with his new family!

A special thank you to the donors for food and transporters for delivering the food. Also to the rescues who take our puppies and help them heal and find new homes.

UPDATE FROM FOSTER:
Good morning Karen.  Attached is a new photo of Chuckie. He overcame rickets, and his legs have straightened out and are strong. He turned into a typical mischievous puppy, and his foster family adores him.

Thanks for trusting him to our care.

Lila's breed

NOTE FROM ADOPTER:
It's been nice to see stories appearing on the Red Lake Rosie's Blog.  Thank you for all the work you do keeping the site going!

I adopted Lila 9 years ago from Red Lake.  She is so sweet and funny and I love her like crazy.   My whole family has always wondered what breeds she is and this winter I had her blood tested.  I was not surprised to see lab, sporting mix and husky, but I was very surprised to see 25% chihuahua!

Do you see any chihuahua in this sweet girl who LOVES the snow?

Thank you for all the dogs you rescue in Red Lake.  And thank you especially for saving Lila so I could have her in my life :)

Ringo is a star!

Ringo, a darling pug mix, came as a surrender to Red Lake Rosie’s shelter in the fall of 2016, because he had a broken leg.

Ringo spent only 2 days at the shelter and was taken by our friends and partners at ARVSS, in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. He was transported by Nancy, Jenny, and Barbie on to Black River Falls to meet our friends from ARVSS.

RINGO'S BROKEN LEG
We recently got this good news about Ringo’s recovery:

Susie says, “Ringo is doing great! He got his cast off about a little over a week ago and is using his leg and building up those muscles again!

We just put him on the web to be adopted :) He doesn't sit still so it was really hard for me to get pictures of him once his cast came off !”

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue gets injured dogs and cats very often and we are so thankful to the rescues like ARVSS that take our maimed and sick companion animals and help them heal and find new homes!

Remembering Reilly

RLRR wants to remember Reilly who lived for seven years as a resident dog at Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue. Reilly had freedom to both be at the shelter and live indoors in the house. Being a working dog, Reilly loved his freedom and involved himself in all the business of the shelter. Reilly was the chairman of the welcoming committee -- always inspecting food deliveries.

Reilly also became much beloved at the Red Lake Elementary School where he often visited and was an ambassador for RLRR among the teachers and students there.

Reilly loved cats and kittens and often would stare for hours on end at the new arrivals. His interest in ducks was not so noble as once he broke into a duck pen and the outcome was not good for the duck. Twice Reilly tangled with a skunk and was banned from the house and had a tomato juice bath.

I love this picture horsing around with Polly. Reilly is wearing the Dalmatian head from our costume as Polly and Mouser look on laughing!

REILLY TRIES OUT BEING A DALMATION
Reilly was greatly loved and is sadly missed as he crossed the rainbow bridge in October, 2016. He leaves behind an empty massage chair in our home that he had claimed for his own.

Against all odds: Rescue of Eden and her pups

A late-night call on January 4th came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to report that a stray dog was giving birth to puppies on bare frozen ground. The actual temperature was a brutal -25, plus the windchill.

The caller reported that five puppies were in the house and Eden, the mama, was outside.  The newborns were hungry and mama Eden was distressed to be separated from them.

What could RLRR do? I thought about our friend Avis who was within 2 miles of the puppies. I called her and she, of course, would help. Avis picked up the puppies and then went on a search for the mama. She found her in the outdoor dog house with two dead puppies.

Eden’s head hung low thinking she had lost all her precious babies. When Avis showed her the five surviving puppies, Eden perked up and started doing all she could to feed and groom her puppies.

Avis took Eden and the puppies to her home and then Eden began having more puppies- two more that also died. Avis transported the family out to the shelter in her laundry basket the next day.

Eden and her five surviving puppies are at the Red Lake Rosie’s shelter where Eden is doing her best to take care of her puppies. Eden is malnourished and has porcupine quills in her bottom lip so she must have been hunting to eat before she began whelping.

The phone call to RLRR and Arvis’s quick response to do all she did saved Eden and her pups against all odds. We do not yet know the final outcome, but Avis put all her effort into this rescue. We want to thank Avis who has through the years saved so many companion animals! What a lady!!
