You gotta have Faith

FAITH'S STORY ON RLRR WEBSITE:
You would never know it today, but Faith, a one and a half year old shepherd mix, was left to fend for herself at a dump in a remote area of Red Lake Reservation. Not only was she malnourished, but also it was clear by her staggering walk that she was injured as well.

After finding refuge with Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue, x-rays determined that she had a spinal injury that might limit her mobility.  But Faith has faith, and hasn't let it stop her.  In her foster home, she has gained weight, muscle, and strength.  She has made tremendous progress with her mobility through just a few visits to an animal chiropractor.

Faith has quickly adapted to living in a house and loves lying on her giant doggie bed. Housetrained and very sweet, Faith is reliving her puppyhood by playing every chance she gets.  She would love to have another dog with whom to play, too.  She also enjoys carrying toys around and chewing on bones.  She’s learning the fine art of fetch – chasing a ball is easy, but returning the ball is not always what she wants to do.

Faith can be a bit timid in new situations, but quickly adapts and starts to play.  Some basic training and consistency would help build her confidence.

Her chiropractor, who works out of veterinary hospitals throughout the Cities, has offered to provide care for Faith at 50% off of his regular rates. He suggests that Faith visit 4-6 times a year to help keep her at optimal mobility.

Give this girl an ounce of love and she’ll return it by the pound!

UPDATE FROM ADOPTERS:
Hello! We wanted to update you on the status of our recent adoption of our little Faye (formerly known as Faith). Faye joined our home on June 23rd, 2014.

She is full of energy, likes to get us out of bed in the EARLY to go for walks and is finding a comfortable fit with her big brother Henry. She is a playful (maybe a little too playful) with Henry and likes to chew on his tail, legs and neck fur. We adopted Henry four years ago from RLRR and he's doing great as well!! Even though he is only four, he acts like an old man, I think because we take him to the dog park too much!!

Faye loves to eat her breakfast and dinner and gets lots of fresh bones and treats!

In the short 4 weeks, her trust level has increased, she seems to be stronger and more mobile than ever, and has almost stopped chewing things she should not be! We are starting a Puppy Middle School class with her in two weeks to continue working on proper etiquette.

We are pleased at her progress and so happy to have her in our home. Thanks for your work with her and other animals, it is very much appreciated.

Paws to Read

The Bemidji Public Library has the theme “Paws to Read”. Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue was invited to visit the library on July 15th and share information about the rescue and its programs.

Karen, Kevin as Bubba the Bulldog, and Mouser provided information about Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue, companion animals, and the importance of reading.

A special slideshow presentation about Vanilla Bean, the Bemidji cat that survived the cold winter of 2013-14 and suffered severe frostbite was shown. We hoped to educate adults and children about the animal needs in all communities and what we can do to make a difference. Vanilla Bean was a good story to tell in his hometown.

Sample books about our world of companion animals were set up. The "Pet Me Safely" hardcover book and bookmark were given to students at the Bemidji Library.

Two sessions were open to the public during that afternoon. We had a wonderful time and love to spread the word about our program.

Maxine needs funds for surgery

Meet Maxine (aka Maxi) who was surrendered because she was hit by car on the Red Lake Reservation during our June clinic. We posted her story and a short video on Red Lake Rosie's Rescue Facebook page on July 25.

According to x-rays, Maxi has two broken hips and one injured hock and still, miraculously, walks. 

We do have a prospective vet and rescue that may take Maxine and we are offering to help pay for the surgery. All we have to offer Maxine is pain medications. 

Prayers and funds needed to get this great dog the surgery she so desperately needs. She walks and wags her tail in spite of her injuries.

Youth Works and the animals of RLRR

There was plenty of time for dogs and cats too. Dogs were brushed, some had their first bath, and Ladybug got a shave down. The dogs got plenty of TLC and walks. Even some of the semi ferals like Sheila allowed the kids to brush and pamper them.

Wolfman makes up for his years as a lonely stray on the Reservation.

Once again Jacob proved to love the kids and the attention he got from them.

Ladybug had lots of fur with burdock matts.  She is so relieved to be shaven. 

Shadow, the cat, got plenty of TLC.

More Youth Works

Youth Works this week came from various church youth groups from Michigan, Kansas and Litchfield, Minnesota.

Painting, yard work, and animal care was the focus of the week.

We extended the shelter yard considerably and applied a coat of paint to the cathouse and the kennels. Two large dog houses were cleaned and painted. The group also cleaned the cemetery and enjoyed picking sage.

The cattery looks stunning with new paint. 

We are pleased to have this very hardworking group at the shelter- Next week we will have our last group and expect to get lots of work done.

Youth Works Comes for another Week of Service

There was lots of action at the shelter from July 21st through the 24th. Once again we had crews from Youth Works who completed many jobs making the shelter a nicer place for the animals who live there.

On Monday night, a windstorm swept through downing four trees in the shelter yard. Thankfully no people or animals were hurt. The next morning as soon as Youth Works arrive it was all under control. There was no trace of the wind damage thanks to the great volunteer work when they left that evening!

A home for Hannah

Hannah came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue from the Bagley Pound.  Nancy and Tom rescued her and brought Hannah to the shelter, otherwise she would have been euthanized.

What a waste that would have been!  Hannah has been adopted and both Hannah and her new mom are very happy.  Thank you to all those who made it possible for Hannah to get a second chance.

NOTE FROM ADOPTER:

A little Mini Dachshund named Hannah came into my life about a month ago. I wasn't intentionally looking to adopt a dog, but as I walked past the kennels at Goodhue Humane Society I saw a little dog shaking and scared and had to meet her. She was 6 pounds and tiny. 

From what I heard, she had moved around from Red Lake Rosie's to the Humane Society by where I live. It was love at first sight and she has fit into my family perfectly. She was a stray up north and was about to be euthanized when Red Lake Rosie saved her and I thank them for that!! 

She is nothing but a tender little heart that has so much joy and life to live and I'm so happy that I found her. This is the fourth dog I have rescued and I highly recommend it. They need you!

Garbage pup no more: Yoda Moto

On March 20th, Avis, our faithful rescuer who watches the Redby garbage dump, found a litter of tiny pups huddled against the dumpster. They were beautiful little shepherds weighing about 4 lbs each. They were hungry and dehydrated and freezing.

Avis drove all the way to the shelter bringing the puppies. We thankfully had a transport on March 22nd, 2 days later- All Dog Rescue quickly agreed to take the litter into Linda's foster care.

Linda named them: Yogi, Yoda, Yannie, Yoko, Yanki.

We are thankful for Avis and other community people who watch for dumped animals, and also to the rescues who take the animals and transporters who make it all happen. Of course the generous financial support of many kindhearted people make it all possible.

A happy ending to what could have been a tragedy!

BIGGER PUP MOTO, FORMERLY YODA

I heard from the adopter of Yoda, one of the garbage pups, now called Moto.

NOTE FROM ADOPTER:
He is happy and we just love him.  He is a good puppy.  Doesn't bark too much and sometimes I think he is hard of hearing - haha!   Just being a puppy I guess.  Thanks again for bringing him into our family.

Debo: Just a marshmallow

On May 1st, we had a call at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue that a bulldog was strayed at the Red Lake Casino and Convenience Store.  This little bulldog was hungry, so a nice girl took him home.  She called to tell us that she could not keep Debo, so she brought him to the shelter where we began to work with him. 

At first, we wondered if he would be placed because he had some food aggression because he had been malnourished. Debo also was a "bully breed" which sometimes are hard to place.

   

We first had him neutered and vaccinated and taught him to walk on leash, then he was allowed free roam with some of his friends.   

We were happy to find out there was a foster-to-adopt possibility at Pet Haven.  Debo left and we hoped it all would work out.  We are happy to find out they say he is a “perfect” dog and has found his forever home.

  

Thank you Pet Haven for taking Debo and finding him this great home.  This little bully turned out to be a marshmallow!

He is a little naughty when he takes my shoes, but how can you be mad when he gives you those sweet eyes. ; )
